Rearranging Character List?

I'm thinking about starting a new character on a different server in a different city; However, I'm not 100% sure I want to give up my first character just yet, hence the needs for 2 characters. My question is, if I do decide to not continue my original character and choose to delete it, how can I move the new character to the first open slot in the character selection screen? In fiddling around with character creation, I have found that if you make two characters and then delete the character in the first slot, the second character will NOT automatically move to the first open slot and will instead remain where it was initially created.

Any ideas?

The slots are assigned by your content ID, not the game itself.

This feature is not present in any MMo I can think of, and there is always a small group of players asking for it. I believe the reason it is never added as it is just not important enough to be considered. WoW have been telling us for ages they will add it, but not yet

Wow is adding it in it's next patch, 4.2. but that's irrelevant. I currently have my Highlander in character slot 2, as I made a Hyur Female before him that I didn't quite care for. My thought process is that once FFXIV starts charging for content ID's, that one will disappear, as I won't be paying for it, and my Highlander will be bumped up to #1
