I'm from North America, so I called the proper support line.

I've called that number before and it didn't cost anything. Why? because nearly every landline/digital/etc phone plan i've ever heard of gives you unlimited long distance within the US. Maybe you are using a really shiatty cell service provider or something, but even then a 4 hour long distance phone call shouldn't cost that much, so something is seriously wrong here. Either you're not telling the whole story, you're making it up, or you really need a new phone carrier bad.
