I am new to the game and want to play with another player. How do you coordinate that? We are in the same area already. Do you need a microphone to tell each other where to go? Typing everything in seems burdensome.

For the most part, you will have to type to communicate in a mmo game. If you would like to communicate by voice with other members, most free companies and some parties may invite you to their VOIP (mumble, ventrilo, raidcall, etc). These are usually limited to only FC members and invited players though; which means you have to type in the first place to get them.
If it is of especial concern, I would suggest you set up a speech recognition software on your computer so you can dictate your messages. If you have Windows 7 or higher, you may be able to set up the built-in voice recognition system to transcribe for you. There are a number of 3rd party applications for transcription purposes as well. Be careful when searching as many of these programs simply let you use your voice to initiate commands, not actually transcribe messages. Similarly, I am not sure if there is a transcription software for PS3, so you might have to do your own research on what suits your needs.

If you want to join them in a party you just right-click them (on PS3 select them and hit the square button) and select the invite option. If they are not in the same area you can invite them directly from the Friend/Linkshell/Free Company lists or by searching for them using the Player Search in the social tab.
If you are on PS3 it would be best to invest in a cheap keyboard for typing, it will be invaluable.
