There's a screen shot of one earlier in this very thread but there doesn't have to be a lore reason (or a history in the Final Fantasy series) for everything. Its a great idea, with few if any drawbacks, that's reason enough to have it.

Even if they did have to be re-absorbed, there is no rule saying it is instant, what's so unbelievable about them laying dead for a few minutes before they start to fade away.
