As monk, I've beaten many many monks with about 15-20 more str and a hundred more crit, speed, and dete than me so the extra stats is by no means game-breaking, especially when compared to the weapon and proper play knowledge. Might be a different story if I was something like Bard though, where gear difference is pretty much the only determinant.
