    Stuck at 50 (Fisher)

    Hi all,

I got my Fisher to 50 a few days ago and so far it's been quite a frustrating experience! I have a few questions for you:

    1. My current gear isn't good enough to catch a Dinicthys (two star). Can I catch any of the super fish (Giant Squid, Jungle Catfish, etc) with the level 50 'Fisher' gear (green) and the Halcyon Rod (blue)? The Dinicthys is far too strong.

    2. Can anybody recommend any fishing spots with an 'easy' one or two star catch, or is my body not ready yet?

    3. Also, I came across a fishing spot in Coerthas that I can't access, even at 50. It's in the far north-east, and it's basically just a series of puddles on the ground. Is this a high-level node? When does it activate?

    4. Finally, do Fishers have any use for jewellery? I don't have any equipped, as they added GP only, and I don't seem to have any use for it.

    Thanks for the help

As I'm only a 40 Fisherman and not a 50, the only question I can answer is the last one.

Fishermen have no use for jewelry - EXCEPT as something to meld more Perception and Gathering to. As we do not know what the percentages are like we do with the other two gathering classes, we have no way of knowing whether they hit caps in terms of specific fish (such as Mining and Botany having a 15% cap on HQ chance), and so melding Gathering and Perception onto those jewelry pieces, as long as they don't exceed the gear stat caps, should be considered a Good Idea.

    1. and 2. - I'm level 50 with nothing but the Halcyon Rod, the Fisher's Gloves, and some level 40-49 HQ stuff I bought off the market and I've been able to catch every fish in the game save the Mushroom Crab, but that's only due to it never being foggy in the Black Shroud (Grr...). I recently managed to finally afford the Fisher's Wading Boots HQ, but I had already caught some of the toughest fish in the game (including Dinichthys) without them. If you have the full set of green Fisher gear (even if it's not HQ), you shouldn't have any trouble catching it unless it was an HQ one you were trying to reel in. Those are tougher to catch. Is it actually saying the fish got away when you try to catch it or are you simply assuming you can't catch it yet because you haven't seen it yet? It's a double mooch from the Wahoo, which is a mooch from the Merlthor Goby.

    3. At level 50 all fishing spots in the game are open. There are sometimes areas that look like they should be fishing spots, but it will say "You do not sense any fish here." That means there really is no fish there and it is not a fishing spot (evil, I know). There are a few weird fishing spots in Coerthas that are easily missed, though. There are two skyfishing spots that require skyfishing bait (bought conveniently in Whitebrim) - the Sea of Clouds right outside Whitebrim and the area of Witch's Drop along the Natalan Ixali area. There is a fishing spot in the latrine behind Dragonhead, and one in a tiny little hole in the ice patch near Snowcloak where the tents are set up. There are two along the cave trail (Daniffen's Pass) that separates the northern and southern areas of the western portion of Coerthas, and of course there is the Coerthas River itself. The last fishing spot is the Weeping Saint, which is a little cave waaaay up in the northeast portion of the map.

    4. No use for non-materia-melded jewelry except for one piece - a level 45 Grand Company ring that increases Gathering by 3 if you have one other GC gear equipped. Don't know the names of the other GC versions, but for Immortal Flames it's the Flamecarrier's Ring, and needs at least Chief Flame Sergeant rank to buy. I usually fill those slots up with the spiritbond+ jewelry, like the Meteor Survivor's Ring or the other GC-related jewelry.

My alt is fishing 50, Halycon, Fisher's AF 4/5 HQ, no materia at all. She has caught the Titanic Sawfish, the Jungle Catfish, both minions, and other 2 star fish.

Either slot materia in the jewelery or spirit bond it.

@Roth, Shady I hadn't even considered Materia! Thanks!

@Esprit The fish got away. I only tried once though. I was a bit disheartened by then, as I'd run around the coast from Costa del Sol and hadn't caught very much. I didn't realise that HQ fish were harder to catch than normal ones, for some reason! I always assumed that, if you could catch a regular Dinichthys, for example, you could catch the HQ version as well. I'll try again later!

Thanks for the pointers on the Coerthas fishing areas, especially the second cloudfishing area! I was wondering what the level 50 skyfishing bait was for, as I managed to catch everything in the Sea of Clouds without it.

This thread lists the caps for materia on the fisher's gear and accessories.

+Gathering affects if you can reel a fish in or not, so if you're getting "The fish got away", you need to increase your +gathering by either buying an HQ fisher's piece with a lot of gathering on it (like the Fisher's Shirt), or melding +gathering materia to your current gear.
We don't really know if there is a gathering cap for fisher, but with all HQ fishing gear (no gathering materia), I never lost a single catch.

It would be nice if the Wards actually had an effect (you can try to use them while fishing, but they stay in effect indefinitely and don't seem to do anything) such that GP could be used for something. But yeah, pretty much the only use you'll get out of accessories is slots to meld other stats to.
