will it be possible to upgrade to PS4?

so, i played the PS3 beta, got the game (pre-sale of PS3 collector's edition) have been playing for a while (subscribed), already pre-bought PS4 and already have the extra PS4 dualshock controller at home.

Will I be able to take my characters and upgrade to PS4? or will I need to keep the PS3 just to continue playing FFXIV???

They said that if you own the PS3 version, it will give you the PS4 version when it comes out.

All characters and game progress are saved on servers. So when you access your account through PS4, everything will be exactly as it was.

How does it work for people who bought the physical disc? Does the game fully installs in the HDD without bothering about having the optical disc inserted since it gets activated via SE anyway?

Technically having the retail disc is pointless because the game is kinda like an APP on the PS3 that's completely digital. The only use that comes from the disc, is that it has the installer on it for the game. It doesn't play the game from the disc, so you'll only need the disc for a few seconds. Alternatively another disc exists that gives you the rundown of Final Fantasy 14's storyline for PS3 players that never got the chance to play the original game, having been exclusive for the PC.

My guess is that when it becomes available on PS4, it will be a free download from the store. Perhaps SE will provide you with a code so that it's free of charge.

To be exact - PS4 beta starts at 22nd February (that's the date when PS4 is being released in Japan) and the live date for the PS4 version has not been announced yet.

And - as mentioned already above - yes - you can upgrade to PS4 version for free if you have already PS3 version and it doesn't matter if you have Digital or Physical copy - both version plays only from hard drive anyway so (unlike with the "official" PS3->PS4 updates of some games) you'll be most certainly not needing the original PS3 game disc inserted in Playstation to play the PS4 version (in this SE wins over Sony). What will most likely hapen is that via Mogstation or some separate web link you'll generate the 12 digit (or what ever code version will be PS4 using) code and simply enter it in the store to download the PS4 digital version of the game.
