Right. There's no possible way they can make a job do something different than what the base class does. That certainly has not been done with any second job currently in the game right now, and can't possibly be done for any future jobs.

Um... can you say Arcanist > Scholar? ARC is a base DPS class but its second job is healer. SO... yes you can make a job that is opposite its base class.
I think it would be interesting to have DRK as a tank class as someone mentioned make it a tank that greatly debuffs the mobs and steals its abilities, HP and the sort.
Seravi was being really sarcastic in her comment, and I believe you missed the point. Her point was that it's entirely possible that a job could do something radically different from what it's base class did without a whole lot of effort (although, as stated before in the case of a possible Gladiator > Dark Knight, the Gladiator's abilities would need to be strongly retooled in order to make the class a viable damage dealer and make it feel more like a dark knight).Um... can you say Arcanist > Scholar? This is why any future jobs need to have a new Base Class.
