Right for Mages , left for melee u are correct . For pug group left path be little easier , especially for Paladins - because u are removing Firestream . I can be wrong ofc , but i thing ur group wiped because allagan rot , this is only real issue in fight , and if party or fresh or PUG , ppl's usually start too panic in battle and dont pass it correctly .

our static has the exact same setup as OP, 2 PLD, 2 WHM, 2 BRD, SMN, BLM. We take the right path, firestream isn't a big issue for melees, it can be dodged easily if you are fighting at maximum melee range.
