I think the point is that every previous update has been just as big as the latest one.Why would it download updates that were old? Why would it force you to download all updates all over again when you can just download one before the latest that includes all most recent changes?
I reinstall frequent and thats all it does, for example the SP system has been changed about 4 times since release, why do we need 3 of those we only need the recent so it bundles that into patch, this happens with everything.
I really dont get the point of the OP.
The sad part isn't that we have to download redundant data, but that the patcher is crap and they don't care to fix it.

If we were then way is each patch going " Up then down then up then up"? if they were ALL increasing within each patch I would agree with you, but in this case its not
You have got to be kidding me. What a waste of space this thread is.
1) We are redownloading stuff we already downloaded. Who cares! SE, please fix all other things, add all other features, and add more content, before even considering wasting time on saving us 10 minutes of download time.
2) We have only had 300 MB of patch data. Who cares! Does the amount really matter? Have you not been in game and seen the changes? Are you upset that the changes we have fit in 300 MB? Have you seen new content added and are surprised now to find it really wasn't? Seriously, if you are going to complain about lack of updates, then talk about the lack of updates and forget about how much HDD space it takes up.

If you DIDNT have to download redundant data, then reinstalling would be like updating FFXI... Install it now, play in two days when it finishes downloading several years worth of updates. You get redundant data so new folks don't have to spend an effing AGE getting outdated files.
Doesn't have to be that way, they could send you each differential patch as needed for a reinstall too.If you DIDNT have to download redundant data, then reinstalling would be like updating FFXI... What extra space? The file you had gets patched into an updated one, the result in disk space is exactly the same except that you only downloaded i.e. 10MB instead of 330MB.I'd rather not have all that extra space being needlessly taken up on my comp.

I still dont get it.....
D2010.09.18.0000.patch 5,442 KB < thats 5.4mb not 300
D2010.09.19.0000.patch 433,984 KB < thats 433mb not 300
D2010.11.25.0002.patch 244,843 KB < thats 244mb not 300
D2010.12.13.0000.patch 257,141 KB < thats 257mb not 300
D2011.05.19.0000.patch 336,172 KB < thats 336mb not 300
So where are we download the same 300 mb update?
They also all contain adjustments/changes which you dont see (and you have to redownload the whole file. SE are not smart enough to make the patcher decrypt/edit/encrypt) So if a 17mb file needs 2-3 lines changing, you're redownloading that whole 17mb!
If you use win7 just go to SE root and hit Search:Today and it shows you files modified today, and I guarantee you they total near the patch size or above.
And not to Mention There is no " Gradual Increase" per patch it goes up, down, up, up If they were all up I can see your point to a degree, but they are not.I still dont get it.....

So the Adding to each patch thing is an invalid argument

Is after installing (reinstalling)
We've had several large updates between December 13th and today's. The fact that they can be condensed into a singe 336MB update means that those several hundreds of megabytes we've downloaded (at pathetic low speeds thanks to the broken patcher) have been mostly unnecessary.
