Every group needs a squad leader - the billions of $s spent on military research and effectiveness in combat probably isn't wrong. The only time a group might not need a leader is if they are all specialists and trained to work together (i.e. FC or Linkshell groups).
This does not need to be your tank, but since the tank is the pace setter (as the puller, which is not the same in every MMO) it makes sense since they are directing traffic so to speak. I've seen healers and DPS bark orders during an intense fight and save everyone, but it is usually the tank who is calling out the run of the mill timing and preferential orders.
That being said, I will never tell anyone to do anything until they have proven that the way they are doing things either A) doesn't work at all, or B) doesn't work with how I am operating. If it is the latter, we compare strats, and go with which one sounds more effective, or which one sounds fun, depending on mood and synergy : D
After wiping twice on the final stalker section of Wanderer's palace because you tried tank the mobs halfway down the hall where the stalker's going to shank you, it's maybe time you start listening to your "stupid DPS". Deliberately letting people die because a "filthy dragoon" dared tell you your business is just plain immature.

~Like the Paladins in DL/AL +1 Relic pulling the entire midsection of WP, tuff guy stands in overlapped AoEs, tuff guy dies before the first heal/holy stun goes off. /Blames healer. Dunno how many times I've seen this but I've seen way undergeared tanks pull the same thing yet survive because they aren't arrogant to game mechanics.
The more this game progresses, the more i find that the standard of player isn't that high, and i don't maintain im perfect, i'm more than happy to apologise if i screw up, hell sometimes i apologize when it isnt my fault but most of the crap that DD do in this game would get you ripped to shreds by the game and the players in other games. Here DD to nothing else, if they can interrupt, they don't, if they can slow, they don't, bard songs? Nope we can wait to regen mana, the list goes on.
DD want to DPS, i get that, i was a hunter for 6 years in wow, but every class has skills and yet the only people who seem to use them fully are tanks and healers, the DD that does is very rare, and its glorious when you finally do get to group with one. Whats really funny is that these DD tend to be very good players and still manage to excel at the DD part of their roll too.
Let me into you all a story I encountered last night. We hold a WP run and were in need of a tank, so we asked duty finder to find us a Tank. Upon entering the dungeon, we checked the Tank Gear, AF Gears+GC Weapon, heck, he not even had the rest in AK or WP gears. While the rest of us were relic+1 all, I was full DL, two of my mates had 5/10 DL pieces and the others were filled with AK gears. Though, we could do a speed run but I was afraid that the tank could not hold aggro well as well as be able to survive in the hordes, I simply advices we run it normally, pulled 2 waves of mobs at a time. Guess what was his answer:
"Mate, don't have time to do 40 mins WP run"....and left...
And that left us all speechless.
Some Tanks can be really arrogant, act all high and mighty, on their high heels just because of the fact that a Tank is highly desired in a party. So frustrated, all 3 of us are levelling a tank now, so that when Tank position is easily found everywhere, they will get back to their should-be position.

Most of the time I take the time to explain mechanics that maybe like a second nature to you and I, but totally foreign to one of your party members. My point in saying this is, a little good will goes a long way. I know when you give someone tips on how to run a dungeon, they sometimes will not take it as an advice, rather as an insult. But still, explain your reasons, maybe it will sway them to your way. Being nice to other people is always a good thing. It is a given with a community as big as the FFXIV:ARR, you will often run into rude, unruly, not very helpful people. But there will be times when you will end up with a group that clicks just right with your playing style. So, my plea is, be that group to others.
PS: I am from Behemoth, if you see me there, come say hi. Maybe we will be able to run AKs.![]()
Good day!
-a tank.
The only time I've been even remotely douchey as a Tank is in AK when the occasional brd or whm thinks they're helping by running off to aggro more mobs when we're still dealing with some. Let the tank pull the mobs unless he/she asks for help snagging a succubus otherwise. I can single-pull every Succubus in there just fine with Provoke; I don't need other people jumping the gun unnecessarily... especially when they try pulling that last Succubus and instead grab all 4 mobs while we're still trying to finish the Eye/Dullahan right before it. In those cases I figure, "you want to grab hate so bad? Go ahead and tank what you've pulled." They usually get the message after the first death.
Yeah playing on WHM I notice that the DD are utter garbage most of the time , its like they purposefully take damage just so I have to heal them when I should be healing just tank and doing damage to make run faster .
But no they stand in AOE , they run in front of boss and get cleaved , they run near other mobs and accidently agro , the list could go on .. baddies everywhere .
Forgot to mention about them attacking wrong target and taking agro ... breaking my sleep causing me to get hit because tank doesn't know what flash is . baddies everywhere.. maybe even you are one of those baddies .

I do..And simply because I have met so many bad tanks and those who thought they are above all else, that push me levelling my own tank.
