When the level cap is raised all this gear that takes months of work to get will become useless, why gate it so early when there is a huge number of players who are already hitting this gate within 5-6 hrs a week?
Agree. I just don't understand it other than from a business model to make the game appealing to new players.

If I missed the launch of a game and I join 6 months late, I don't expect to put in 2 months effort and be at the same place as people who started on day 1.

considering the time to farm enough myth to completely gear one class is longer than the patch cycle they keep referencing (2.5-3 months) ?

probably nothing, as just around the time you'd finished farming myth and gearing everything a new tier of content would come out

But you already can. Just create another character for your next 50. Knock out the quests and dungeons with FC help and your 50 in < 1 week. Then you farm 300 myth on two jobs every week and have two jobs in full IL90 in 3 months. If you did that from launch you already have 2+ characters in mostly IL90. And this is what a lot of people are doing, which makes the games single char system seem like a waste.

If a path exists around a limitation players will take it.

Here's how I view the situation. In every mmo out there you pretty much choose your class and that is the one you play on that character. In a sense, unless you make a new guy, that is your "main". In this game, while you can level up different jobs, each job aside from your main is nothing more than a way to let you "try" a different class. If you like it, then that becomes your new main. Also, in other games where you have one class but different specs, you would still have to get gear for your other specs in the same way you do it in this game. Your weekly cap is never for each of your specs, but instead for your character. So say you played a monk in wow, if you wanted to gear up all 4 specs you would have to max out your tokens for your character and spend them on gear 4 seperate times. That is just how devs do it so you stay subbed longer because if you get your class/spec geared out (or reach the carrot) you get to do it all over again for a different spec/job (the carrot gets casted out on the line once again). While it is annoying for some people, it would be very bad for business if you could totally max out your guy for each class/spec in a month.

no one is stopping you from playin the classes, no one is stopping you from gearing the jobs, it's just a matter of time that you'll get everything eventually. It's entirely up to you and your group of friends.

if you want to make it faster and not deal with lockouts you can level an alternative character. The game is quite open ended on what you can do, you just need to be motivated to do them.

Not at all. For a lot of people it saves a lot of time to be able to level up a new class/job in the future and immediately have gear/items ready from GREED rolls or from left-over loot. It also means if I'm not satisfied playing my current main, I don't have to throw all that time I invested away, the crafting/gathering levels I have accumulated, etc.

Just because it doesn't serve one purpose, doesn't make it a complete waste.

Not to mention this game is terrible at inventory management for alternate characters (since you cant mail to your own alts).

Also, they specifically marketed this game as a 'do it all on your main' kind of game. Where alts are a little more of a cosmetic feature, not to mention a lot of people have the discounted 1 player per server sub (which further reinforces this design philosophy of do it all on your main).

The myth lockout is fine as it is, and it gives you a choice of a 'main class' as well as allowing you to funnel myth tomes how you want (say run WP on a tank class and gear up your 'main' dps class). For coil though, it would be so much fun to be able to play with another group on a different class. Coil lockouts should be job based, where I can go in with my static as a PLD and then later on in the week if i'm bored or someone is asking I could go into coil as a DRG or BLM and take a shot at some dps loot maybe, but mostly just experience the content in a different way. This would also promote the social aspect for many people, as they would finish coil on their static and then run with other people on an alt class. If they are truly worried about gear bloat, maybe limit loot lock to something like 2-3 jobs per week. So you can go in with 2-3 jobs and get loot and then be loot locked if you run with any other jobs.

In the end, instance locking has always been a poorly thought out mechanic that is very anti-MMO (it doesn't promote social interaction between players). Its a large reason why many end-game MMOs continue to fail at making endgame content. Loot locking is not a new concept, maybe the devs here can consider not copying WoW for just this one thing.

All these white knights are sickening me. Listen, this game is a lot of fun, but when you can only gear one job in AF2/Allagan in 2 months (depending on your luck), it's not fun. You log in once a day, do coil, cap your myth, wait next week, same thing, maybe buy an AF2 piece, rinse and repeat. It's not fun. Farming Darklight for all my other jobs was tedious, but extremely rewarding and gratifying. But every FC I've joined has a strict "main&sub" loot list for coil. You're stuck with 2 jobs. I love to play every job, because they somehow made all of them extremely fun. But I can't gear them how I want. That's not how an MMO should be. I don't care about this hardcore/casual thing, MMOs should never offer all this diversity, but then restrict you as you're playing. That's the opposite of what it should be. "But you don't need i90 gear! Stop whining!" No, but it's available and I want it. Not for e-peen purposes, but because it gives me something to do and look forward to. This games content becomes boring fast this way, and leaves people generally more unhappy as opposed to the alternate.
