Two Players, Two Differnt Starting Towns

My wife and I just got this game yesterday. Glad to be here and see what FFXIV has to offer.

We both go way back to multiple MMOs, and we usually run a tank type and healer type - since they're almost always in short supply. We've found out that choosing the respective classes, we start in other cities. Such as Gladiator in Ul'dah and Conjurer in New Gridania.

How easy is it for us to get to the each others city, or merge quest-lines?

    Thanks

You will be able to go to other citys at around lvl 15. Thats around where you get your airship pass and when the first dungeon opens up too. Just keep doing story quest and you should be able to meet up in no time.

Travel between those two cities isn't impossible on foot, but there are class quests every 5 levels to deal with, and the main story quest lines are based around the starting city and different for each character. If you did meet up, the traveler would have to go back and catch up with all those quests anyway, before they could get an airship pass, enter dungeons, etc.

Tank + healer is a good combo. Form a 2-person party before registering for Duty Finder (behests Lv10+, dungeons Lv15+) and your waiting times could be on the order of seconds rather than much longer.

Thank you both for your information.

Am I understanding right that our Class quest lines basically taper off at or around lvl 15? Or are they every 5 levels until 50?

You can travel by foot between Ul'dah and Gridania. You need to go to Ul'dah > Central Thanalan > Eastern Thanalan > South Shroud > Central Shroud > Gridania. I wouldn't recommend it unless you are about level 20-25. But by then you will have an airship pass through the main story quests. You could always see if you could get a high level character to escort you.

I think your thinking of Limsa Lominsa.

It can be done fairly easily at any level. You don't need to be leveled enough for the mobs along the path so long as you don't fight them. You just need to be able to recognize the icons indicating which mobs will aggro and which won't. There aren't that many aggroing mobs along the main path, so it's easy enough to give the few there are a wide berth and simply avoid any fights. I actually did it accidentally while I was just out exploring at around level 12 or so.

Of course, that still leaves the issue that once a pre-level-15 character gets to the other city, it's not where their main storyline quests are. The first 15 levels of main story quests are all in the city you started in. You can't do the ones from the other cities. All you'd have is side-quests.

No, the class/job quests keep coming, but travel is easy by then. Plus each level requires more XP than the last, so the quests don't seem as frequent.

Class quest is every 5 levels and ends at 30. After that you have job quest all the way up to 50.

The story allows you to freely travel between cities starting at around lvl14-lvl15 (depending on how early you rush it). At that point, the individual city quests end and all players begin following the same storyline. For reference, the story quests are shown by a special quest icon that looks like a flame. Also, try not to ignore quests given by your class' guildmaster as those are class quests and they give useful equipment and abilities that will help you level.

If you want to meet before 15,you can walk to Gridania (-north> central thanalan -east> eastern thanalan -ne> south shroud -n> central shroud-n> gridania) or reverse it to travel from Gridania to Ul'dah (be aware there are aggressive mobs in eastern thanalan and south shroud you will want to avoid). You will not be able to run all the story quest content together though, and the game may require you to separate the party for instances, but you will be able to play the fates and many quests with your spouse. Unfortunately, not all of the quests in your respective regions will be available to both of you. By default, you will have some lvl1-15 quest lines in ul'dah your spouse in Gridania will not have access to and vice-versa. Frankly, there is not a lot of incentive to go to other cities until level 15.

You can still party together for behests starting from level 10 to help speed up the experience. it is a nice chunk of experience and will speed up your progress until you unlock airship travel.

The main scenario quests merge around level 15, so you'll be able to do all the dungeons and anything that isn't solo only together by that point. Pretty much all the instanced story battles from the beginning up until that point are all solo, so you're really not missing out on much leveling up to that point separately unless you wanted to do some of the side quests together.
