You can actually. That's how I've managed to probably get 2 or 3 of my MIN achievements when there wasn't anything else I needed from an an area.1 shard per hit is incredibly ridiculous and if you want to get the achievements in higher zones and say want to keep farming fire shards for example, you can't. They have so many empty slots on the gathering spots that could be filled with shards. If I could farm fire shards and water shards all the way through the achievement categories for the luminary btn and min tools I would.

This actually works out quite well. Since I didn't need any materials, I got about 10/15 of my botanist achievements by harvesting nothing but shards. And thanks to the trend among Thanalan trees and bushes, it took me about 2 and a half days (if you smash all the time together) to get almost a full stack of lightning shards. But of course that is only if you really want to get the achievements done for the golden weapons. :U

There was a recipe in Alchemy to break crystals into shards, was around lvl 5 or so. Something like this would be nice to see again.

As I have pointed out, they have an Achievement system.
They could add:
Level 30 and level 50 you get an achievement and in it you get a Job stone. You go to the guy in old grid to get the job stone, it allows for +3 and +5 to shard yields at those levels.
If they add new job stones to gathering, it isn't an issue. They can be switched out.
If someone already has Miner 50 it isn't an issue, they go to old grid and get their Job stones.
The current system is bot friendly and has no function.

some of my goldsmithing recipes use a lot of shards (just to make amber from raw amber is 5 wind shards) can go through a lot of shards real quick. no I do not want to spend my gil on shards. SE could do something to improve this. either decrease the amount of shards per synth or increase the amount of shards per hit in mid to high level gathering areas. (rmt usually stick to the low level areas. at least from my experience)

I guess they decided not to increase the shard yields at all this update? I haven't tested it but I'm assuming not.

They haven't, from my experiences.
On the bright side, there's more ways to get a few shards now. Daily quests offer 15 random shards per quest. I also got 80 Lightning Shards from a Treasure Hunt (Toadskin Map). No where near enough for people who regularly mass-craft, but I suppose they'll slowly stack up when you feel like sitting down for an hour or two.![]()
I don't think the shard yield should go up tbh. The people that put the work into farming them deserve the coin they get, and I'm more than happy to pay for them, if they're putting in the effort to get em for me.
Some things in life are tedious, not saying games should mirror life, but not everything in a game should be pie to get ahold of!

I like to joke about how shards gathering makes me lose my will to live. On a serious note, precisely because of the way RMT is allowed to run free, I simply can't justify buying shards from anyone because of the concerns regard to "ethical sourcing", so to speak. So the leniency toward RMT is hardly helping the human gatherers.
