Well that's stupid...
^ Agreed.
Nobody deserves the win on any content until they go through it. Theres is no such thing as " i deserve it because i almost did it".

Question for you..
If you're a dragoon, you grab a duty finder Titan, and you die at 10% but the group clears, did you deserve the win?
Now, if you're a dragoon, you grab a duty finder, but one of the healers always dies at 10% and that domino's into a wipe, you don't deserve the win?
Job doesn't really matter in the scenario, just picked a job for easy example that isn't as vital to brute-forcing through a win as say the tank or a healer.
Both of your questions = "NO"Question for you..

but one of them will result in a win...and later when you have your relic +1 and can't dodge anything, people will know that you either paid or you got carried.
I can agree that the answer to both is the same, on the other hand. If a group is fighting a hard fight (for them, whatever content) and someone dies very late, they don't usually kick them before they pop loot open. So the common answer to someone dying late in the fight is that they still deserved to be present for the win.
If a person who didn't win is in a group who did, they deserve the win. If a person who can win feels they need to pay to pay, or find a group like the OP's group, there's nothing wrong with that.
Like you said, if you have your relic but still suck, that will become apparent. All groups like this (I'm on the same server but don't know them fyi) are doing is improving the pool for the casual content everyone must do.
