Materia Questions

I'm just getting to the point where I want to start looking at getting high level Materia and crafted items since I have all my DL and am just working on Mythology items. I am looking for what items convert to level 4 or possibly level 5 materia (is this even out yet?). I have read Item Level 55+, but can someone give examples? Or is it only from 2 star crafted gear (Gryphonskin, Darksteel, etc.).

I believe for DoW/DoM armor/accessories, you need iLvL70 gear to have a good chance at Rank4 Materia, but ilvl55 HQ gear can vary rarely drop you a Rank4.
For DoL/DoH armor/accessories, there are no ilvl70 pieces that you can convert, so iLvL55 is your best chance.
I believe the chance to get Rank4 materia from iLvL55 crafting/gathering gear is much higher than it is for DoW/DoM gear though.

So if you're talking about getting Rank4 Gatherer's Guerdon/Grasp/Guile or Craftsman's Competence/Command/Cunning materia, you need to be spiritbonding things like Militia Bracelets/Wristlets.
I've heard that Aetheryte rings incorrectly give you DoW/DoM materia even though they're crafting gear, so the Militia Bracelets/Wristlets are probably your best bet if you're looking for crafting/gathering materia.
Don't think there are any crafting/gathering neck/earring pieces that are ilvl55+ that you can convert.

I've also heard that if you put at least 1 materia in them, they spiritbond faster, and that HQ items spiritbond faster as well.
So you might keep that in mind.

Hmm OK no wonder tier 4 battle is so expensive, you need to convert the 2 star crafted items...OK, then also is there even tier 5 materia available? Can you add 5 materia onto all items that allow materia to be added? And can they all be tier 4 materia?

I don't think Tier5 is available yet since you can't convert relic/dropped items and there are no crafted items higher than ilvl70.

You are correct, every piece of gear(that can be melded) can hold 5 materia.
The green slots are guaranteed to meld, then any extra melds on top of that have an increasing chance to fail.

For example:
If you have a piece of gear with two green slots, then your third meld might have a 55% chance to fail, your fourth meld might have an 80% chance to fail, and your fifth meld might have a 95% chance to fail.
(I'm not 100% sure those numbers are correct. I think the chance changes based on the item level you're melding to and the rank of materia you're trying to use)

Technically, you could put rank4 materia in all of the 5 slots, but you have to be wary of item caps and it would be STUPID expensive because of all the failures trying to get the third, fourth and fifth melds to stick.

Aetherynyte Ring can pretty much turn into any materia. You usually lose and get something like water 3, but you can also get lucky and get a Vit 4. They're easy to make and you probably want the +1 spiritbond anyway so you might as well use them.

1-star items are iLv55. They are the ones that can rarely turn into tier-4 materia.

2-star items seem to have a very high, if not 100% chance to give tier-4s.
