Relic Quest and Item Costs - How did you do it?

    Hello!

So, I have been grinding and trying to save some Gil so that I can finally purchase my Erudite's Picatrix of Healing so that I can get on with my Relic quest. I thought leveling a profession would be a good idea, but at the moment I am spending more than I should just to level! I did some grinding for Fleece, and as soon as I had a substantial amount the prices dropped! And then Quicktongue material, wow. Someone I know playing a melee class had their quest weapon for around 4K plus the materia, why are the Grimoires so much in comparison?

Oddly enough, the materials to have an ALC craft my book for me have gone up, specifically the Bloody Grimoire Binding. They were only about 3K before the patch, and now they are north of 20K. Does anyone know why that is?

How did you get the funds to afford the beginning of your Relic quest? Any suggestions?

On my first Relic, I got some pieces lvl50 and I spirit bond them and I got lucky it only took me 3 items to get my 2 Quicktongue III. If you need to craft your weapon and meld it, I will gladly do it for free for you.

To make money you don't need a level 50 profession. You just need to play with the market with some low level mats or craft.

You can save money by getting the precursor items necessary to forge your picatrix and having a friendly crafter assemble the item for you. You can also soulbind gear while you're running dungeons for darklight to try and gamble up some QT3s.

I went for my WHM relic quite a while ago. My weapon, 2x QT3s, and the tip for the meld ran me almost every gil I had; about 150k in total, with QT3s being the majority of that cost (64k each at the time, I think). I made my money back slowly over time through soulbinding and selling materia on the market.

I started BLM relic yesterday. The weapon was 8.4k, and I had two Savage Aim 3s lying on a retainer from soulbinding expeditions. Easy, by comparison.

Arcanist, huh? I can make your pre-relic book, if need be. I can also supply you with jewelry for dungeon crawls, which you will be able to turn into materia. (If you're lucky, you'll get the materia you need. If not, just sell what you get and it's usually at least 50k)

Find me in game on: Crayola Roseart

I'll be on later tonight (roughly 9:00 pm PST)

The 2 battledance material III that I needed for my curtana they were given to me "FOR FREE" from a total stranger, who I was simply asking some question about the meld. In the end he did not just gave me the material for free, he even paid for my meld, since he is GSM instead of BSM.

Thanks for all the wonderful responses.

I wish that you could own more than one piece of a green quality item. I've done WP so many times and had to pass on things because I could have duplicates. I'm not sure where else I should farm in order to try and find some Quicktongue III materia.

Another thing that scares me is getting the QT materia and having the meld fail, because it is so expensive. If I scrape up the funds and buy two pieces of the QTIII material and it failed I think I would cry.

It's it lovely when strangers in a game take an interest in other people and attempt to help further their progress. You're very luck to have had someone supply you with those! Not unheard though. I saw it and took part in some of the events the server had trying to get people what they needed, etc.

You can have 1 copy of a green item in your Armory inventory.
You can have also have 1 copy of a green item on each retainer, allowing for 3 copies of green items in most cases.
The same applies for blue items (like Ifrit weapons) and it might work for anything that FFXI might have called "rare/ex".

One question is what value all the untradeable, unsellable, frequently unconvertable extra greens have. (I usually feed them to my GC via Expert Delivery missions.)

2 pieces will never fail, if you do MORE than 2 it has a chance to fail but you keep the 2 materia already in the book.

I think that I would feel better having someone meld the material for me, because none of my professions are maxed so I only have Materia I at the moment. Getting the materia and then having it melded, it seems like the hardest part.
