I've said this countless times before. But SE won't be adding Thief as a class. It will be added as a job.
I think we people who are used to tradition and/or FF11 need to break our habit of what we believe a class or job is going to turn out to be. We already know a good portion of other jobs that are quite different from their 11 counterparts, or from tradition itself. (Paladin used a small portion of white magic, and was able to cure itself. In this incarnation, their cross class cnj abilities are mainly just utility and don't really compare to the powerful shield/defense buff CDs they get. Even dragoon has bits and pieces of other classes that make it being a drg slightly odd)
There is a good chance Thief will come out as something off the wall, something different and unexpected. But one thing I do know, so long as the tradition holds. It wont' be a class. The 14 dev team have been true to their naming methods: Classes are something that break the tradition in names. (Gladiator, Marauder, even the new 2.0 class Arcanist) And their "jobs" are traditional. With this idea in mind itself classes can't be something like thief.
Back to the original topic: I fully expect the next class to be Musketeer, with Corsair and as an obvious job. Thief is a very likely candidate as a counter job for a musketeer to branch off of.
However if Thief does not get this position, we'll see it come from a rogue/assassin named class. (I personally think assassin is a weird class to come from and likely will be saved for ninja, in my opinion)
Yoshida has told us personally that he recognizes much of the western community want to see samurai and ninja, 2 fan favorites from FF 11. We will probably get to see them next year.
Dark knight has been noted as another popular job people have been asking for. He toyed with the idea that it could come off of gladiator as an anti paladin capable of DPSing (maybe even clutch off tanking). If this is true. I am personally excited about a sword wielding Drk with my favorite looking AF armor in the game. (Chaos baby, yeah!) I speculate that IF we see this, it will be with an expansion that introduces Ishgard as a story focus, and as a real explorable city. They are a knight focused, European inspired theme. There is no reason we wouldn't see them originate from here.
We also have to consider that, given arcanist's split role. What other jobs could our current roster of classes become? It is highly likely we will not see new classes for each new job SE has planned for the future. Some of them I'm sure we will see re-branded and placed as a job for classes we already have.
