You can always ask people to pull mob(s) away from your node, or even switch to your DoW or DoL job to help kill the fate. Sure it make take awhile to get your GP recharged when it ends but if these high-end nodes are that important to use, then save or by cordials so you can quickly get your GP back. There are called Full Active Time Events for a reason.
I don't know if it was a bug, but last time I was gathering in a FATE I used stealth to ignore it and something targeted me anyway (not AoE, single-target attacked me) so I am wary of FATEs forever as a DoL. When it comes to FATEs and unspoiled nodes its a really annoying game of chance. Get your rotation down and speed through it as fast as you can.
Also, if you're fighting in a FATE or just mobs and you see DoH or DoL in the area- pay attention. Those AoE's break our action and probably hurt a LOT. Aim them away from bystanders. For a minute you're that guy's Tank and its your job to face the cone away from him.
The fates are annoying for sure when gathering, getting hit by the mobs in fates suck, and whats worse is that when you have stealth up you move slower than a snail. Maybe if they can't move the fates or gathering points allow us to move faster using stealth please!

I'll start off with a disclaimer: I don't have any classes or jobs at 50 yet.
That being said, it makes sense to me that Fates would be dangerous. A large group blood thirsty enemies is raging through the forest around me... but for some reason leave me alone while I frollick and pick flowers... The game world is intended to be chaotic and dangerous. Why should gathering be any difficult? Removing any degree of danger would only serve to make gathering super trivial and devalued.
Also, like I said, I don't have any 50s, but here are two helpful bits of advice I think it kind to share: 1. Enemies with red thingies next to their names usually indicate they are hostile (and glowing fate-gem thingies next to their names usually mean they are not only hostile, but stronger than average) and 2. when you see a red shape on the ground, move out of it.
Hopefully armed with those two tidbits of wisdom, you'll be able to navigate through or around fates.![]()
The problem with these fates is SE is putting them smack dab on the nodes we need. I dont see why you cant shift fate XX over by 25 yalms. If I have to join the fate, and I cannot hit the mobs until I level synch (which is 90% of the time at level 50 botany) then why in the name of god can the fing mobs hit me!? Stealth does not fix this. SE NEEDS to fix this crap.

What's really frustrating is you can't just easily swap to a fighting class to deal with the fate because you're helpless due to a minute long cool-down on all of your abilities, thus discouraging you from helping anyway.
This tracking page helps, since you know exactly when they spawn so you don't have to sit around waiting: http://ffxivclock.com/#/

It's not just gathering that suffers from this. There are FATEs that pop in the middle of quest areas as well. I can think specifically of one in Coerthas and another in Mor Dhona where a quest popped on me as I was trying to do a quest fight. And both were boss type FATEs. Nothing worse than trying to fight a tough mob for a quest only to have a boss type FATE pop in your face. These things are poorly positioned.
Gatherers have it particularly tough, because you're able to be damaged, but unable to defend yourself.
What they should add is a FATE pop timer, wherein if you're in the affected circle, a :20 timer begins telling you a FATE is about to start. That gives you time to move if you need to.

Yeah, I know what you mean at lvl 50 a lvl 10 fate pops and I still get sucked into it without having to level synch. They should make all gatherers have to level synch to get into fates even if they normally wouldn't have to so those of us who do not wish to fate whilst gathering can ignore it. Make us have to hit a button before we get sucked into the fate.
