FFXIV is the only game that tries to blow off my GTX460 SE

Hi guys, i wonder if there's other people in my situation.

Since the last 3 months i have some big problems running the game because of my graphic card, the GTX460 SE

I play for about 20 minutes and it totally crash blackscreen pc and terrible noise in my speakers.

I checked afterburner to monitor the activities of my graphic card and once the game is loaded and my character appears on screen everything goes through the roof. GPU usage is ALWAYS at 99%, the fan speed is at the max and the temperature still goes between 98 and 104... 104 is the limit and that's what makes my pc go crazy.

There is no dust anywhere near my pc and inside, the card is not overclocked and with any other games it runs fine.

Oh, and everything is set on standard in the video settings for the game.

If anyone knows what is the problem please help me and or if someone is dealing with the same thing post what you think it could be.

    Thanks everyone!

mhm, surely sounds like a big problem.
i'm not exactly using a 460SE, but i have 2 GTX460 1GB in SLI, tho, even if i only use one card i can easily play at high settings at a 1920x1080 res without breaking the 80°C limit.

can you give me some more specific specs, like CPU, RAM, OS(32/64), current Driver and Nvidia control panel settings?

i've experienced a problem with the 460 once, that under some settings it runs hotter.
the funny thing is, on some lower settings it's possible that my card runs alot hotter in FFXIV then under some high settings, although i still maintain the same load on my card.
best example is for both test i was in the black shroud, with 8xCSAA i had 85°C, with 16xQCSAA i had 77°C.
but the gtx460 going as hot as 98-104 is really new to me!especially if it's not overclocked.

What is the rest of your specs, especially what case are you using, and how is it set up with intake/exhaust fans, also, what is your average room temperature and placement of the case.

What are the exact settings for the game, including resolution.

Drivers can have an influence over how efficiently your card runs FFXIV, so be sure you have the most recent ones from the Nvidia site of course.

What temperature does your card run while idling?

Here is how my graphic card is set.
    Core Voltage : 1000 mV
    Core Clock : 763 MhZ
    Shader Clock : 1526 MhZ
    Memory Clock : 1900 MhZ
    Fan : auto

That's the stock settings of the gtx 460 SE

And for the other parts... RAM corsair dominator 3x 2gb, i've just made a test with occt and they run perfectly fine.

    CPU : i7 930
    Core Voltage : 1.247 v
    Multiplier : x22.0
    bus speed : 132.7 mhz

I have the latest nvidia driver, i'm playing in windowed mode 1920 X 1080.

I have a great case, the antec 9000, every dust filter is cleaned weekly.

The card at idle is around 38 celsius but like i said once im logged on FFXIV everything max out gpu usage stays at 99% always!

About the game settings, everything is middle to high, ambient occlusion is off. I tried with everything at the lowest and it does not change anything.

I really don't understand what's happening cause before everything was fine, this morning i even open the card and apply some good thermal paste on the GPU... it doesnt change anything when FFXIV is running. Next step - Formating the pc and reinstalling everything... once i get my game disk back !!

If someone finds that my graphic card setting are screwed up go ahead with your advice!

I would like for you to try the following settings.

Set everything to standard, no aa, no ambient occlusion or depth of field, and drop your window resolution to 1680x1050.

Thanks for your input Loth, but i have been able to stay in the game for less than 5 mins for the setting you proposed me.

Should i try to press the Cmos reset button, on my motherboard to be sure i'm on default settings in my bios ?

i got me shaman cooling on my 580 and its calm and silent like a cat now... before i was affraid of my pc blowing up...
The game just doesnt give the gpu the like 98% or 97% restriction like most other games do. The last few % are the real heatmakers. FF just eats every resource it can get. So i think the GPU runs like 99,9% most of the time...

I would get other cooling just for the noise and i think the card lives longer if not running on heat limit all the time.
I think ATI stated that ffxiv can even damage gpus... and they didnt change a thing so far... lets hope the ps3 bringes
more cooler times to us pc users as well.

oh and... depending on how many frames you get... if you get 60+ v. sync helps to cool down as well. you dont really need more then 60+ frames anyways in ffxiv and for me it causes ugly tearing.
