Relic quest: question about melding materia

I'm at the point of the relic quest where I need to get a weapon and two materia. The weapon was fairly cheap to find in the marketplace, but the materia are much more expensive (around 60k each). Do people usually just bite the bullet here and buy them?

More importantly, how do you meld them? Can I do it myself now that I've gotten Weaver to 19, or is there a chance for failure? I'd hate to spend 100k+ on these things and then lose them.

How exactly does melding work in this case?

    Thanks.

You either need to get lucky converting your level 40+ gear or buy them. Then you have to get the right catalyst for the meld. Grade 3 I think, since your doing whm weapon you need a 50 carpenter. They will meld for you. You simply request a meld and it will allow the crafter to meld your weapon. You dont even have to give them the items or weapon for them to do this. A lot of crafter ask for tip or charge around 1-2k per meld. Hopefully you have some FC members or friends who can do this for you. If not a /sh or two should find you someone. Good luck.

    Fixed.

Most of what the above guy said is correct though. Converting Lv40+ (maybe just Lv45+?) mage gear has a chance to pop out a Quicktongue III (or whatever it is that you need). Most people just buy them from the markets though.

Melds require a specific crafter at or above the level to equip the item, so in this case you'll need to find a lv50 Alchemist. You'll also need two Grade 3 (or higher) Carbonized Matters. The melds cannot fail, because the item in question has 3 100% success meld slots.

    Thanks guys! Two follow-up questions:

    1. Where do I get the carbonized matter besides the marketplace?

    2. How do I allow someone to meld my items without giving them the items? I want to know the mechanics so I won't bother the person with explaining it to me.

    Thanks!

Carbonzied matter is from botany or mining.

Right click on someone and there should be an option 'request meld'. It'd be as if you have the skill to do it yourself (provided the guy you click on can actually do this), using your mats and you can optionally put a gil amount as payment for the service. Of course, the recipient has to agree for you to finish the melding.

I assume my botany has to be up around 45 to get them?

46 would be the minimum level, but if you're seriously doing this just for your relic, buying two would surely be easier.

I ended up eating the cost. If you haven't been leveling a crafting class up to this point, you should have plenty of gil to spend on what you need.
Also check at the bottom of the Market Board list. I found 2 of the weapon on the Midgarsormr server that had already been melded and were slightly more expensive.
(about 80k for the melded weapon, which wasn't a bad deal considering that quicktongue III's were selling at ~30k a pop and the rod itself was about 8k).

I figure I can take up a craft later, but doing it solely for this quest is very time consuming.

Yeah, I have 300k gil and nothing to spend it on, but the idea of spending 100k on just these two things....I just need to get over it
