How does the relic quest work?

I'm not there yet, but I've read some posts that seem to suggest you need to run dungeons and earn tomes before you can do this quest, and another thread that implied crafting was necessary also.

Is there something complicated about the relic quest? Will it be clear that I need to do all these things when I get the quest?

Step 1: Complete Main Scenario Quest, All Class and Job quests for that respective weapon.
Step 2: Talk to ‘Nedrick Ironheart‘ in Vesper Bay who will give you the quest ‘A Relic Reborn‘
Step 3: Talk to ‘Rowena’ in Revenant’s Toll
Step 4: Talk to ‘Gerolt‘ in Hyrstmill (Northwest of Fallgourd Float – take a Chocobo Porter)
Step 5: Gerolt will ask you to find your respective ‘Broken Weapon‘
Step 6: Present Gerolt with your Job specific weapon double melded with Grade III Materia. (either buy these weapons from the Marketplace or look below to find out how to get these weapons)
Step 7: Obtain ‘Alumina Salts‘ from fighting the D’horme Chimera in Coerthas (Northeast of Camp Dragonhead). You must defeat the Chimera as the Job you will get the relic weapon with. Once defeated bring the salts back to Gerolt.

Step 8: Obtain ‘Amdapor Glyph‘ from completing Amdapor Keep. You must complete Amdapor as the Job you will get the relic weapon with. Bring this to Rowena
Step 9: After going back to Gerolt, he will ask you to slay 24 beastmen with the ‘Unfinished Relic Weapon‘ he just gave you
Step 10: Slay the Hydra in Halatali. You must defeat the Hydra as the Job you are getting the relic weapon with.
Step 11: Defeat Ifrit (Hard) and obtain ‘White-Hot Ember‘. You must defeat Ifrit as the Job you are getting the relic weapon with.
Step 12: Defeat Garuda (Hard) and obtain ‘Howling Gale‘. You must defeat Garuda as the Job you are getting the relic weapon with.
Step 13: Defeat Titan (Hard) and obtain ‘Hyperfused Ore‘.

I would be running lvl 50 dungeons to earn tomes b/c you will need a serious gear and dps check when it comes to titan you see a lot of people saying it's hard, and it is a challenging fight and tougher than anything you've faced up until then. But basically shout groups want you to have darklight armor and either Ifrit HM or preferrably Garuda HM weapon b/c their is a dps check in the heart phase of titan's hard mode. Some people choose instead of farming darklight or the af2 gear to craft or buy some item lvl 70 gears instead...So I hope this hleps best of luck once you make it to endgame.

Step 2: Talk to ‘Nedrick Ironheart‘ in Vesper Bay who will give you the quest ‘A Relic Reborn‘

He doesn't have this quest, but two others: one for Amdapor (I think) and one called The Weaponsmith of Legend.

Also, after finishing the main quest, a bunch of side quests appear inside the Waking Sands. Do I need any of these? They are around level 47 for some reason...unless they were always there and I didn't notice them before.

The level 47 quests were there before, they appear once you rebuild the Waking Sands. However, you WILL need the level 50 quests which unlock Ifrit, Garuda, and Titan.

Also, as far as gear goes, I would highly recommend you not tackle the relic fights until you have a set of level 55 gear (Either the militia/imperial set, or drops from Wanderer's Palace. I recommend the crafted stuff, get it HQed). By the time you fight Garuda, you should have at least upgraded a fair amount of your set to level 60 gear from Amdapor Keep and Ifrit. By the time you tackle Titan you'll want a fair amount of level 70 gear, buying darklight with philosophy tomestones and hopefully getting a weapon from Garuda.

The only real difficult parts of the quest are:

Finding a group for Chimera/Hydra if you are on a low pop server (they arent in DF) otherwise the bosses are easy.
and Titan
