So this may be an odd first post for me to make but it's something I find interesting. I have played lots of mmos over the years and while every one has lots of interesting people I have never run into so many that don't use anyones characters name. I am almost always referred to as whm. While I understand in 8 player raids or more where there could be more than one whm it doesn't always matter to specify which whm you are talking to but I'm really just talking about light groups. I am not really interested in the roleplay aspect or immersion into the game. Really my only gripe, I just wonder why people don't like using names any more?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets miffed by this. Come on, there's only one person here who is a 'war', do you really have to be so cold?! I always make it a point to call people by their names rather than class, as this just seems kinda rude to me.

Because whatever is being said is usually something relevant to your job, and with 7 other people there with other names you don't know, it's faster to say the whm, than your name. If you're the only whm in the group everyone will immediately know who they are talking about, rather than looking through their list. We're only talking about a difference in fractions of a second, but yea, at least that's why I do it.

8 man by Job. Sorry, I ain't got time to being all formal y'know lol.

There are certain things the have always annoyed me, like when someone refers to a female character as "him". But in this case, I can't agree with you guys.

In group play, people use the job abbreviations for tactical instruction, not social purposes. The strategy that they are trying to employ is likely a broad concept that isn't specific to a certain person or even the job. And considering how every boss in this game has a strategy to it, people tend to explain these things often. Typing out the broad concept makes more sense, rather than trying to address everyone by name.

In Military, they will address people by rank. Your commanding officer isn't going to walk around calling every soldier by their name.

I try to use people's name but don't always do it. Mostly depends on the situation. If there is little time to type, chances are I'll abbreviate, call you by your class or give you a nickname.
Also, if you have a long name and or something that I find to be taxing, odds are that I'll just type the first 3-4 letters at best. I've yet to have any complaints. If no one complains, I keep doing what I'm doing.

I do this because most female characters are played by a male. As I am talking to the player and not the character I refer to the person by their gender.

It takes less time to use shorthand whenever possible when you're using a virtual keyboard. Could also be a macro and therefore makes more sense to use a generic label that can be applied across many groups.
