In group play, people use the job abbreviations for tactical instruction, not social purposes. The strategy that they are trying to employ is likely a broad concept that isn't specific to a certain person or even the job. And considering how every boss in this game has a strategy to it, people tend to explain these things often. Typing out the broad concept makes more sense, rather than trying to address everyone by name.

In Military, they will address people by rank. Your commanding officer isn't going to walk around calling every soldier by their name.
but that doesn't explain why it's not happening in any other games ever. I don't remember ever being called 'mini/minstrel' in lotro (though people did call me 'the hobbit' hehehe) and I certainly am not called 'the scoundrel' in swtor. I'm not called 'shotgun/fists' in TSW and I also don't remember being called 'priest' in the countless MMOs where that's the healing class. and if my memory doesn't fail me, people in FFXI didn't call me 'whitemage' either.

I think it's a different reason: the names showing in the party frame and turning off name plates. I have done that. (though I have to say I still make sure I know my party members' names)

    I hate it lmfao.

I call people by name in 4 man.
8 man by Job. Sorry, I ain't got time to being all formal y'know lol.
Especially with me small ass TV I can't see well lol.
8 man i can see not using their names. Although when you have multiple's of the same job I think that would be rather confusing. Besides it takes the same amount of time to type in (examples of people who have posted in this thread) Nyo, Noe, Fey, Nim, Jin, Amy............as it does their job abbrev's. I feel like now a days people lost the human factor. We aren't playing as a community, but rather as a job in a game. Besides, it avoids the using of "her", "he" which could possibly be offensive if a guy is playing a female character or the other way around.

Not touching the rest of your post, but a squad leader in charge of three people would most certainly use names. Especially since it's likely that at least two have the same rank. A company commander would use both rank and name 99 times of out 100.

I get called poet. I'm not sure what the big deal is, considering some people have longer names and it's just easier to type the class acronym.

If people in your FC/friends list are calling you WHM, then I see your point.

Don't have time to say your name while in battle.

Personally I don't like being called 'heals' or '<job>' either and use people's names myself, if you really want to get your message across you should use their names, be respectful. Same as irl, you don't go about saying 'Hey, human, do this.' or 'Hey, <job>, do that.', that would be really weird... and usually those who make up some kind of names for people tend to be assholes. :P
And in case if you don't know the player behind a character, either refer to the character or use 'they' instead of 'he', don't be rude.

This is a video game, not the real world. "SMN" is good enough when I need to tell you to use LB on something. If you want me to call you Aissy, you should take the time to befriend me and make the relationship more than just two strangers in a dungeon run.

I must confess this has never bothered me and it has never even occurred to me that it might bother someone else.

I would find someone calling me by an abbreviated version of my name without my authorisation to be far more offensive.

    It's the equivalent of

    A: "What's your name, son?"
    B: "David Smith"
A: "Well, Dave - do you mind if I call you Dave?"
    B: "Well..."
    A: "Great! Well, Davey.."
    B: "Davey?"
    A: "D-Dog! the Davester!"

    etc etc.

It's just a lot easier in the middle of a DF run to call out a job role. It has a three letter abbreviation that is understood by everyone in the party, it's even in autotranslate. WAR{tab} is a lot faster to type out than "O'Hizgledred Binglybop". If you are offended, fine, that's your right. But the person hasn't done anything unreasonable or rude.

because you're playing with random guys instead of FC/LS friends. your friends will call your name, not your job or your appearance.

in real life, your friends call your name, strangers call you mr.lawyer, doctor, mr.red shirt, etc.
