So, stepping into the video game world you're one of those who let all manners outside, eh?

And really... if you don't have time to press 2 more keys (1 extra second?), why do you think the other person has time to look on the chat window and read what you typed?
It might be just me but mostly when glancing over the chat 'aissy' catches my attention much better than 'sch'... no, I do not play a summoner. Besides, I was mainly referring to situations when time is not of essence.

Going to agree with this one.

If I start calling people by name, its because I built some kind of friendship/relationship with them. If we're going to be in a party and only talk about battle tactics, to then never see you again or talk to you again... Then yea, job title suffices.

I think the point of this thread though is for people to be more personal in their MMO affairs though. So if you want people to call you by name, try being more personal toward them ^^

I must confess this has never bothered me and it has never even occurred to me that it might bother someone else.

I would find someone calling me by an abbreviated version of my name without my authorisation to be far more offensive.

    It's the equivalent of

    A: "What's your name, son?"
    B: "David Smith"
A: "Well, Dave - do you mind if I call you Dave?"
    B: "Well..."
    A: "Great! Well, Davey.."
    B: "Davey?"
    A: "D-Dog! the Davester!"

    etc etc.

It's just a lot easier in the middle of a DF run to call out a job role. It has a three letter abbreviation that is understood by everyone in the party, it's even in autotranslate. WAR{tab} is a lot faster to type out than "O'Hizgledred Binglybop". If you are offended, fine, that's your right. But the person hasn't done anything unreasonable or rude.

I may have to make that name if it fits.

Either way,f or me, it depends. If I'm mid-fight, there's no way I'm typing out whole names if I need to get a point across. I don't type fast enough to justify it.

because you're playing with random guys instead of FC/LS friends. your friends will call your name, not your job or your appearance.

in real life, your friends call your name, strangers call you mr.lawyer, doctor, mr.red shirt, etc.

I'm always referred to by name :'D Sometimes in 8 man speed runs they'd call me "BLM" but then there'd always be another BLM in the group so it's like "OK...well...we'll both do it, eh?" But never been referred to "SMN" when on my SMN, it's always "Aylin" :'D
In an FC I was in I even gained a nickname which everyone used instead...

I always get referred to as him, and it's probably really annoying but I always correct them. It's just weird being referred to as a guy :|

I try my best to call people by name. I may shorten it down, for example, if the person is called Alexander, I'll call them Alex. Easier to type out.

The game already gives you the names, so I always use them. I think it's rude to call someone by their job or class.

Anyway, it's rare for me to be called "blm" or "sch" here. In WoW I don't think I've ever been called by name, even when "pally" is longer than it.

I am almost always referred to as whm. While I understand in 8 player raids or more where there could be more than one whm it doesn't always matter to specify which whm you are talking to but I'm really just talking about light groups. I am not really interested in the roleplay aspect or immersion into the game. Really my only gripe, I just wonder why people don't like using names any more?
    Hey Summoner, too many words.

J I N is closer together than B L M, so there's is no reason excuse to say blm when Jin is faster to type.

Honestly if someone is gonna call me by my job/class by all means say Red Wizard! :3

I always found it strange people refer by job abbreviations in this game but can understand it because parties are fleeting acquaintances compared to FF11. Then again, because the relationship is fleeting, I suppose they don't know you, and so using your job title is the equivalent of say Sir or Ma'm in RL

In 11, people would more commonly refer to people by nicknames or by the first syllable of their name.
