So much of this. Encounter way too many "GURLS DUNT PLAY GARMES!" him/he/his. Doesn't drive me nuts or anything (There's a guy in my FC I always accidentally call her 'cause of the character name) but it does seem a little ignorant

Not touching the rest of your post, but a squad leader in charge of three people would most certainly use names. Especially since it's likely that at least two have the same rank. A company commander would use both rank and name 99 times of out 100.

I try to use people's name but don't always do it. Mostly depends on the situation. If there is little time to type, chances are I'll abbreviate, call you by your class or give you a nickname.
Also, if you have a long name and or something that I find to be taxing, odds are that I'll just type the first 3-4 letters at best. I've yet to have any complaints. If no one complains, I keep doing what I'm doing.
crap 1st post "OP".. get it? nooo..? k bye
It takes less time to use shorthand whenever possible when you're using a virtual keyboard. Could also be a macro and therefore makes more sense to use a generic label that can be applied across many groups.
"I've been playing MMO's a long time and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that lions do not concern themselves with the opinions of sheep. Just take that little voice in your head that tells you to be tactful and understanding and shoot it...shoot it in the goddamn face."
- SAO Abridged (Ep.2 | 8:35)

If they don't call me by my full name "Dyrstahl Hortahtynsyn" I stop tanking.
I get called poet. I'm not sure what the big deal is, considering some people have longer names and it's just easier to type the class acronym.
If people in your FC/friends list are calling you WHM, then I see your point.
Don't have time to say your name while in battle.

Personally I don't like being called 'heals' or '<job>' either and use people's names myself, if you really want to get your message across you should use their names, be respectful. Same as irl, you don't go about saying 'Hey, human, do this.' or 'Hey, <job>, do that.', that would be really weird... and usually those who make up some kind of names for people tend to be assholes. :P
And in case if you don't know the player behind a character, either refer to the character or use 'they' instead of 'he', don't be rude.
This is a video game, not the real world. "SMN" is good enough when I need to tell you to use LB on something. If you want me to call you Aissy, you should take the time to befriend me and make the relationship more than just two strangers in a dungeon run.Personally I don't like being called 'heals' or '<job>' either and use people's names myself, if you really want to get your message across you should use their names, be respectful.
