Does city-state info change when you choose a grand company?

    Hi all,

Silly RP question here. In my character profile there is a "City-State" section, which currently displays my starting city. I'm not level 20 yet, but when I reach it, if I choose a grand company not associated with my city-state, will that part of profile change as well?

E.g., if I start as a gladiator in Ul'dah, but then chose the Maelstrom (Limsa Lominsa) as my grand company, will my city-state now reflect that, or will it always be Ul'dah?

    Thanks!
    Grey

Will always be wherever you started. I have flipflopped Grand Comapnies and it's still Limsa.

Since you are concerned with RP stuff, you should note that your starting city isn't necessarily your character's hometown. The starting cutscene can go either way, either as you returning or visiting the city for the first time.

I don't know why they even chose to have it be a thing in the game. Most people don't care, as it's just a little line of text that shows where your character started (or restarted, which is a bigger issue for some). But there are some people who care about RP, are OCD, whatever the reason that it really bothers them that your starter city state is shown and can never be changed.

IMO they should either scrap it, tie it in with GC, or give it significance with the option to change (such as city specific story lines like in XI).

It ties into the storyline occasionally, largely because you will have met and interacted with different NPCs depending on where you started. For instance, when you join the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, your starting city changes who it is that invites you to the group and what they tell you about it, because players will be invited by whichever NPC (or NPCs) from that group were stationed in the same city where their character started out. The story makes more sense that way, becuase that's who you've worked with before and who has seen your progression so far.

There's also a few more minor changes in the text in a few other quests based on whether an NPC is meeting you for the first time or welcoming you back after they've worked with you before. (I'd expect these differences to become less frequent and obvious as you get further into the story and have worked with more of the NPCs in each of the cities, but I haven't gotten through the whole story yet to be sure.)

So the game itself does need to know where you started out, and it woudn't make sense for that to change. Where you started is a matter of who you've met and dealt with before. It's a different issue than who you're affiliated with. Since this is another piece of info the game has about your character, they decided to display it on the profile page.
