Is there much point to Alt?

Maybe if your a different race. I know some races can be better for certain classes. If your just a casual player then it is not really to big of an issue. If your a hardcore player or plan to seriously consider competitive raiding, then every stat counts and that means the correct race and the correct class combined is a must.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've read one character can be all classes and have all crafts.

Yes you can be any class and have all professions.

I'm still VERY new to the game, only level 11 on my first character, so if I'm misinformed, please feel free to say so
