Is there much point to Alt?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've read one character can be all classes and have all crafts.

I'm still VERY new to the game, only level 11 on my first character, so if I'm misinformed, please feel free to say so

For me, I like playing a variety of characters. Change of scenery and all that.
But also, you can use an alt to experience the main quest story from a different city.

You're not misinformed.

There are other reasons someone might have alts*, but needing to do so in order to play as a different class isn't one of them.

*Friends on multiple servers, enjoying playing as more than one race, seeing the other nations' pre-15 stories, getting around weekly caps on tomes (this is only a concern for level capped characters), extra storage if you can get a friend to pass things back and forth or have access to the same FC chest, the heck of it, etc.

Maybe if your a different race. I know some races can be better for certain classes. If your just a casual player then it is not really to big of an issue. If your a hardcore player or plan to seriously consider competitive raiding, then every stat counts and that means the correct race and the correct class combined is a must.

Yes you can be any class and have all professions.

Maybe if your a different race. I know some races can be better for certain classes. If your just a casual player then it is not really to big of an issue. If your a hardcore player or plan to seriously consider competitive raiding, then every stat counts and that means the correct race and the correct class combined is a must.

The racial stat differences are so minor as to be almost completely negligible. And they don't scale, so a + or - 4 at level 1 will be a + or - 4 at 50. It's not even worth mentioning.

The first 15 levels are different depending on which city you start in (with minor storyline differences continuing beyond that point). That can make it worth having three characters, one starting from each of the starting cities. I have a Mi'qote from Gridania, a Hyur from Ul'dah, and am planning to add an Elezen from Limsa Lominsa. It's nice when you start traveling to the other cities to have the understanding of what's going on there that another character starting in that city would give you.

But each character is pretty independent of each other. You can't even directly share items with your alts. (You can only mail items to people in your friends list, and you cannot friend your own alts since they're never online at the same time. As Bixby mentioned, there are some workarounds with getting friends to pass items to your alt for you, but you probably won't want to share stuff between alts here to the extent that's common in many other MMOs.)

Crafters tend to get bogged down in items, because they always level multiple (if not all) crafts. It's not difficult to fill up your inventory, both retainers and the FC chest with various mats/items/armors/materias for melds. So, there's another reason, provided you have someone to help you with item transfers.

The most significant use for an alt right now is to get around the two time-gated lockouts at endgame:

1) Mythology tomestone cap per week (used to buy "AF+1", "AF2", whatever you wanna call it, the i90 set of AF armor)
2) Binding Coil of Bahamut access (once you complete a "Turn", you can't backtrack until Monday

I change characters depending on my mood. 3 of my character are so I can play with certain forums or friends. But I do have a favorite, and it helps to have active FC members on when I play.
