The current system is the best ever, here is how u fish:

1- go to the spot you want
2- go invs
3- select the bait u want
4- connect X360 controller
5- close down your monitor
6- go to bed with the controller "ignore wife/gf comment"
7- Fish!!!
8- ???
9- profit

Exactly, it is (you can fish) as you wrote. I'm doing similar thing. Fishing in my kitchen (real one) far away from my TV or while watching movies (not seeing game screen). THAT is the reason for a change in fishing in my opinion.
Is it realaxing? No. Is it fun? No. Do you have to think even a little while fishing? Not to count baits, no.
I think fishing should be made fun by making it a not demanding mini game, which let you forget about other things. Something that, as it was said by Yoshi himself, let us relax. Not make us living bots only pushing one button when fish bites.

Not to sound condescending, but how is this different from 'real life' bait fishing?

You bait the hook, attach a bobber if needed (most often is), and you sit around hoping that you catch something worth while.

Is it fun? Not really, much like real life bait fishing. Is it relaxing? I think it is, compared to most other activities in game.. it at least allows me to trudge through my College work.

It may look similar to you, but still it isn't.

Firstly, I don't want a game to be like real life. Game should be more game like, give a fun feeling of doing something else than just waiting. Just look on other fishing games there are, because they are games they have to be something more than real life waiting for a fish. Oh, and totally forgot about the most important thing! Do you always get a fish when you see your hook moving in real life? You do have to have skill to really get that fishy! Reel your line, stop, reel again, be careful about reeling speed and in the end depending on the size of the fish use a net so it won't fall off the hook. It is not that easy as to press one button.

Secondly, fishing in your room for a virtual data that you can't eat and fishing outside with real fresh air, wind, birds singing... moscitos bitting you isn't the same. Or am I wrong in this...?

Finaly, well... can we, do we have to compare real life fishing with a game? Totally different thing for me.
