I think crafting as it is can be made more fun, but believe me it needs to get real fun real fast.
edit: As it is now it feels like EQ2's crafting but less fun and dangerous.

Problem with this is you gotta craft to keep up with the gear to go out and kill monsters. Everything is player made and lots of gear is not just dropped randomly in game while you got fight something. no rewards really for killing stuff or rare drops from mobs.SE should get a clue from blizzard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIob8wXaQkU

Some people enjoy crafting more than anything else and would rather do that than gather or battle. Just because you prefer to battle does not mean they should make crafting faster to rank up. I personally think they did wonderful job on the crafting system the way they weaved all classes together. You will hear people say they want the crafting to be more like XI but in reality crafting on XI was as much involved as this game. You just did not have a SP bar telling you how far away you are. If your a person who leveled up a 100 Craft in XI you would have to agree XIV is less costly and faster to level up. To the people who say you need a crafter for everything , your right, but who made your ingredients for your salvage gear, or the cursed gear for your Abjurations? The game is new so there isn't tons of high rank crafter's to project the false image of crafting not being critical to the game by having a surplus of items on each server. Time heals everything. Just wait and see my words become reality.

I'm not even saying it has to be faster to level up but right now leveling up crafting is boring...you craft the exact same item over and over again and your only goal is to either run out of materials or reach the rank you are aiming for at that point in time. Crafting just needs to be more fun. And now that you bring it up I do think crafting SP should come faster. If we are treating all classes equally then it should be just as easy/difficult to get SP crafting as it does while battling.
I have to disagree the crafting system to me is done perfectly people craft to make money and influence the economy it shouldn't be easy or everyone would be a crafter and there would be no importance in it. The fact you like to bang on mobs and get sp quickly doesn't mean crafting should be easier because you don't enjoy it. i personally enjoy crafting the only reason im playing the game now as i wait for the revamp of the battle and class system.

ya know the crafting system in this game is fun when you first get into it. after a while though it just gets so repetitive.
there is a saying among the high ranked crafters in my shell. "We love crafting, it lets us catch up on movies tv and podcasts".

Boy I really like the idea of a crafting behest. That would be very original and cool.
Crafting is a hard thing to balance. If you make progression quick, the mats will be too expensive to afford for most people like crafting 80-100 was in FFXI. Thus, you'd have to spend time farming monotonously and then synthing. If they make progression slow like this, you have to supplement the grind with Netflix or TV.
Crafting quests, the large group synths, and crafting endgame would all help out. The lowbie battlers are getting a Dunes version 2. I think the crafters should have a zone as well where they all get together and SP off boats and airships in a party.
If crafters truly are equal in status to battlers, they have to build content for them that is equally engaging.

Personally, I'd be overjoyed if they made the crafting system similar to what they had in Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. The game kind of tanked overall, but the crafting system was actually pretty engaging and, for the most part, made you feel like you were actually crafting a certain item. Not to mention it was far less random and tedious.
They also had strings of quests that you could do in order to learn specific recipes. Such as a going to different towns to learn to make different parts of a ship, so that you could eventually build your own. They also tied in the other crafting classes as well, seeing as you needed to be a carpenter in order to build the majority of the ship, but you needed metal parts from blacksmiths, or needed a weaver to make the sails.
In general, I think they either just need to simplify crafting a lot more, or go all out with it and make it far more engaging. As it is right now, it's just slow and monotonous just for the sake of being slow and monotonous.
