Why are the servers down so often?

I know that SE has been having continued issues with Binding Coil, but it seems that just about every other day. Its down for 2 to 3 hours. Is it really necessary? I recall where just Binding Coil was shut down and not the whole server, why not approach it that way?

Normally it's just once a week for regular maintenance. They recently did a maintenance to:

- Initiate server transfer

and again for:

-Fixing Coil T5

In addition to the regularly scheduled maintenance, that's 3 in one week. That's probably why you thought it was a lot, but those were the reasons.

There's been frequent maintenance because good players have been acting in good faith by reporting bugs and exploits so Square can fix them. Case in point, certain abused Fates that people farmed ad nauseaum.

They don't really mention everything they fix. Last maintenance also fixed mount's battle log entry (now it says "You mount xxx", it used to attribute it to the nearest NPC/mob, "Diremite mounts xxx"), it wasn't stated anywhere.

If you are referring to things like Dark Devices fate. It wasn't an exploit according to a post by a CM. Although they did adjust it soon after he made that post.
