You know, of all the arguments for jumping you could provide... that's actually one of the weakest.
There's nothing next-gen about jumping. It's been in games going back decades now.
And for decades, games that required jumping have had it, games that didn't require jumping didn't have it.
There's a game called Jump Man that came out in 1983. You could jump in that game. Why? Because it needed it. I don't think anyone's going to be calling Jump Man "Next Gen".
3 years later, the original Legend of Zelda was released on NES. That game had no jumping. Why? Because it didn't need it.
Quick Trivia question: Which of the above two games went on to become a long-running game series with numerous titles in the series, has been highly acclaimed by gamers and industry people alike and has won numerous awards and accolades, with one game in the series being called one of the greatest games ever made? Hint: It wasn't Jump Man.
Did you play Neverwinter Nights? No jumping in that game either, yet it's been a long-running and popular series with people still playing it to this day.
How about Diablo I or II? No jumping there.
Any of the Baldur's Gate games? No jumping.
Previous numbered Final Fantasy games? None of them had a "jump any time you want to get around the terrain faster" button either. Yet, the FF series has been another highly acclaimed RPG series.
Guild Wars has no jump button... has never needed it and has been a successful game without it.
Myriad other games out there don't have and have never had jumping in them, and some have gone on to become highly successful games regardless.
It has nothing to do with "being next-gen".
Jumping is added to games that require it. As of now, FFXIV does not require jumping.
People may really really want it. But you do not, ever, need it and there is no argument you can give that would prove otherwise. Being inconvenienced by having to run a few extra seconds to get up a cliff that's too high to run up, or simply adjusting your navigation beforehand so you don't have to "go out of your way" in the first place is not a "need", it's a "want".
Of all the things the game truly does need at this point, that some people around here are jumping up and down, stomping and pouting like petulant children over something it doesn't need is pretty telling of the mentalities of some in this current generation of MMO gamers.
And just because I know someone's going to say "oh you just don't want jumping". Allow me to correct you right now: My stance is if the game doesn't need it, there's no point in adding it. If the game needs it, and it's intelligently implemented to be a valuable and restricted function that isn't there "just because", then I'm all for it.
Point being: If you really want jumping in the game, great. Ask for it. Just please stop with the ridiculous assertions trying to inflate your opinion to sound more important than it is... such as regarding it as "a next gen feature".

Some people want jump for the same reason they want an AH....because it would display SE showing the ability to change directions in regards to the design philosophies behind this game.
That is why people will always say they want jump.

As far as jump being an "immersion killer".....doesn't hold water, if you think about it.
Watching adventurers not be able to run up and over a 2 foot cliff kills immersion (it still happens). It doesn't bother people who don't want jump when they see other players absolutely clip through entire cliffs and hills? When a mob with a push back move uses it against a player with their back to a wall, for instance, doesn't it kill immersion when the mob is still attacking that player who is magically transported 15 feet away from the attacking mob, but still attacking and taking damage?

People need to get over this. This isn't the main argument against Jump. The main argument is it's simply unneeded at this present time or in the near future and even Yoshida thinks as such by placing it at lower priority than what it was. Most MMOs you jump for the purpose of just to jump. NO USE FOR IT OTHER THAN THE ABILITY TO JUMP. Only a few MMOs actually put the jump feature to use but the grand majority does not.
So the reason people want jump is why they want an AH...they feel it will fix things instantly which it will not.
Being able to walk up small walls looks stupid, being able to jump up or down a small hill will look much better. If that is a waste of time, they shouldn't add chocobos either and just have the chocobo NPC give you a 100% run speed buff.People need to get over this. This isn't the main argument against Jump. Being able to zip up and down a cliff is just lazy.
Edit: AND OMG YOU MEAN TO TELL ME PEOPLE WANT JUMP SO THAT THEY CAN JUMP!? THAT'S CRAZY!!!
