My 65 year old mother plays WoW and she can't remember rotations and she doesn't know her cooldowns no matter how many times I tell her, but she is better at using the mouse to move than I am...

So try to keep in mind that the bad you're playing with might just be a senior citizen who is breaking into gameing for the first time in their lives and their reflexes are a LOT slower than those of us in the 15-30 range. Also things we find easy like primary stats, hit caps, block caps, and etc... are really complicated. Mom's trying a druid now and keeps wanting to put intellect on her cat spec. I have to keep reminding her that if you claw things it's agility, if you wave your hands it's intellect.

Just invite them to FFXIV, those people don't deserve to be punished by playing WoW.

Well, according to some of the posts in this thread, the proper thing for you to do would be to inform your mother what a terrible player/person she is, and that she's wasting everyone's time by playing. You should also be screaming at her while using profanities, because, you know, she should learn to grow some thicker skins!

Wow, so if we take out the "You suck!" out of our games and no more harassment, are we going to turn gaming into a land of Happiness? Sorry to disappoint you, but you will never get rid of trash talking or elitism in games. It will happen behind people's backs in /whisper if not said in the party chat. YOU are the reason we are getting the "hide your names" in PvP! Oh no, someone told me I suck, I am going to hide and cry in a corner now. GROW SOME BALLS and take it like a man! Grow up and move on and become a better player. If you can't take that in a game, I wonder how you take rejection in real life? Sorry, you didn't get the job. Now go home and weep, or learn from the experience and get motivated.

And as someone said, people don't know what real bullying is. Real bullying is when a group of people corner you and beat you up in the bathroom, or they post negative things about you constantly that make your life worse and worse. Telling someone they ****ing suck or booting them is just a way to let you know that you need to improve. It hasn't reached the point of bullying yet if they are simply trash talking you; Your reputation isn't on the line yet from a simple smackdown.

I just think that's ludicrous. If leaving the party would avoid the abuse, then fine maybe. But to be forced to log out? That's totally out of order. He should not have to be forced out of the game simply because others don't want him around.

As for all this back in my day stuff, well that's not relevant anymore. It may have been ok to beat the crap out of people like savages and then smile about it back then, but this is the 21st century. People are expected to be behave like human beings and treat each other with courtesy. Any form of bullying is unacceptable; be it verbal, physical or even online.

This is what happens to people when schools say all kids are special, everyone's a winner, you didn't lose, you were the last winner!
People don't get to hear the truth about themselves until they are in their 30's when their boss calls them in and says clean out your desk you're fired, you're a loser,!

And I bet half the people white knighting this guy in this thread are self righteous hypocrites who don't want to do nice things themselves, they just want to tell others to do nice things to feel better about themselves.

The experience is what you make it. I can honestly admit being an MMO newbie the first time I stepped into this game. The first FC I was in just seemed to already know everything that is supposed to be in an MMO and I felt very inferior and wondered if it was going to be hard to find a bunch of people that where experienced with these games and where willing to help newbies.

I came up with the idea of creating my own FC with those thoughts in mind and I figured I'd let the future decide my fate.

A little after a month has gone by since my creation of the FC and now there's literally over 100 active players of vets and newbies together just having fun and learning all there is to know. There's no "I'm better than you" talk. We wipe? That's okay we will get 'em next time. It's not anyone's fault that a team isn't doing good because there's no "I" in team.

I love the community I built and it really didn't take that much to do it. We should all have that experience.

In other words, you believe that all terrible, inappropriate behavior is ok because people need to learn to be ok with those things because they exist. Just because people think that they can get away with their sociopathic, inappropriate behavior, doesn't mean that anyone should accept it as a valid mode of behavior. I say to you the same thing I said to the other guy: YOU are what's wrong with online gaming.

I've got bad news for you (as I'm sure you learned the hard way throughout your life): if you treat people badly, ultimately it hurts you the most. People who have this little respect for themselves and those around them end up having MAJOR issues getting and keeping jobs, getting into and staying in relationships, and really just aren't enjoyable people to be around. But that's fine, pretend that this only applied to online gaming and that people are just "having fun."

Protip: sociopathic behavior is not acceptable, even online. As we move to less and less anonymity online, it's going to become more evident that what I'm saying is very true.

The internet puts distance and a safety wall around a bully. In RL bullying, somebody eventually shows up with a fist, knife or gun. If the bully is lucky, somebody with authority steps in first and gets parental.

I get the heartfelt feelings of the story posted and getting shared around - but I'm highly suspect of it. I suspect its a fiction, written to drive home a point.

The point is valid, the specific case is just too typical of these kinds of dramatizations. And setting it in Korea puts it just out of reach of those reading it, giving it an element of 'we're not this bad yet' combined with making it harder to verify. Putting the Korean pages through google translate yields even less clarity. They are comments to comments, with some nonsensical bits mixed in - like the kind of garble text a spammer might email you.

The point of the tale is that sooner or later, most of us will be on one side or the other of that harassment - and people need to know that if they choose evil, it has a lasting negative impact. This is legitimate - this is real. But the actual story here seems suspect.

    Curious:

Just an update to the original story: It seems it was all made up (i.e. fake) and the original poster (in the korean server Zuljin) has apologized. Once again I reiterate--it was a conjured up lie fabricated to bring about empathy and populist sentiments on other users. Seems alot of people did end up falling for it...

The thing is you are correct. When i was in school if you acted up you were sent to the principals office for licks and then your parents got a call and you got the same thing at home and guess what... you didn't do that again. Now if a kid acts up they are sent to the Councillors office to find out why they are acting out and then they are given a script to "help" calm them down.

Kids have no boundaries today, i see it in kids i deal with on a daily basis in schools. They do what they want and are not punished for it and the way they talk back to teachers and parents blows my mind, they have no respect for anyone at all. I had one kid go so far as to threaten his mother to call the police for child abuse if she spanked him and the sad thing is the mother would have been in trouble. We are reaping what years of codling has done to our children and in an online environment with no social restrictions we get to see exactly who they are.
