FFXI's first expansion pack, Rise of the Zilart, released a year later
    • New story arc.
    • Raised the Level Cap from 50 to 75
    • 4 New jobs: Ninja, Samurai, Dragoon and Summoner
    • Added 15+ new zones.

FFXIV maybe under different management but I suspect they will operate within a similar manner. Version 2.2 and 2.3 will probably just build on what's already released in 2.1 (more items, primals and coils/CT) while they focus all their content creation on the expansion pack.

    Not exactly...

    Time Line for FFXI:
    - May 16, 2002: PS2 ver. released.

    - Aug 8, 2002: Rank 5 Missions (including the Shadow Lord fight) were implemented, but with the level cap at 50, no one had beaten it.

    - Sep 12, 2002: The level cap is raised to 55. High Level Notorious Monsters, such as Behemoth, are added to their respective areas.

    - Nov 26, 2002: Level cap raised to 60.

    - Apr 15, 2003: Rise of Zilart preparation update. The level cap now became 65.

    - Apr 17, 2003: Rise of the Zilart goes on sale.

    - May 16, 2003: Final Fantasy XI Completes 1 Year of Service

    - Jul 17, 2003: The level cap became 70. A new region, Tu’Lia, was unlocked. New HNMs were added (such as King Behemoth).

    - Oct 28, 2003: North American PC ver. released.

    - Dec 16, 2003: The level cap became 75.

-Feb 2004: Dynamis, Artifact 2 and Relic Weapons were introduced.
This put the first level cap adjustment 4 months later, and then the 75 increase was 19 months later, then many years to get to the last set of lvcap adjustments.

They even stated that the rough draft of the expansion has already been submitted. So with that being said I kinda expect the first expansion to be release sometime within 2014 (Realistically around Q3/Q4). I agree they will likely follow the same trend from FFXI.

It has also been confirmed that the first draft of the first expansion has been submitted! Obviously there is a lot of work to be done, but at least they are planning for the future!
