HUD layout tips for a busy player

    Good afternoon!

I'm actually a good bit into the game now, but I recently jumped from PS3 to PC.

While I was adjusted to the layout of everything while on the giant TV, I found things painfully cluttered on my laptop's screen. I just unlocked SCH, and know the I need better access to my pet's commands.

I've seen players in videos and screenshots use heavily customized layouts. How did you guys set your screens up? I'm looking for ideas!

In the main menu under HUD layout. You can right click to turn certain items off you might not want as well as move them around. My HUD now looks nothing like when I started. Trying to upload screenshot while at work but...

My hud layout is pretty flawed. I can never quite get it the way I want and often wish I had more screen space somehow. But it works well enough for me. I've adjusted :P

There are some neat ideas in this thread.

One thing I see a lot of is turning on the option to hide empty action bar slots, to fake differently shaped bars. There are some screenshots in that thread, for example, that appear to have the minimap in the bottom center with two sets of 4x3 or 3x3 action bars on each side. It's actually 3 or 4 horizontal bars with only the abilities on either end filled in, and the minimap covering the middles of the bars. Handy to make the UI visually match alternate control devices like gaming mice/keypads.

Another nice thing you can do is to use the /hotbar and /hud commands to switch things around and/or control what's visible/available. I use something like the examples in this thread to cycle hotbar 10 through four different hotbars (stored on my Miner hotbars) that each hold one set of gear sets, plus a button to move to the next hotbar. I.e., I click the bottom button and it brings up my DoW gear sets. Click again, DoM gear sets. Then DoL, then DoH, then back to DoW.

I also have a macro* that turns on/off certain hotbars and UI elements for when I'm in/out of combat. Stuff like:
    /hud gil off
    /hud dlist off
    /hotbar display 10 off
Since I don't need to see those things when I'm in combat.

*This is a lie. I keep meaning to do this, but I haven't actually gotten around to it yet.

Does the size of your monitor play a factor? If so what size monitors do you have?

I hope this isn't too silly of a question

I am a winner, even though I sometimes fail.

Yeah. A layout that makes things that look/feel clustered together on a smaller monitor can look/feel spread out on a larger one, even at the same resolution, because your eyes can't take in as much of a larger monitor at once, so they may have to travel more. It's more noticeable when it's the difference between not glancing up/down/left/right at all and a quick glance, than it is when it's the difference between a quick glance and a slightly less quick glance.

On that subject, you can also resize HUD elements. In the HUD layout screen, click the element you want to size and use ctrl+home to cycle through small, medium, and large.

I think my monitor is 20ish inches. 20-23. Or something. I dunno. It's about this big. 1920x1080.

I'm a scholar and my HUD is pretty much like this. Hope you find it inspiring!

I do now have 1 more horizontal bar under the pet bar now since I'm 50 and that screenshot is when I was around 35 or so

This is what mine looks like, my cross-bar is actually at the bottom right, so I can see everything still. Enemy Info pops up just beside/level to the chat. Very minimalist I guess, but I hate the clutter i normally see. Also since the map is easy to open up I disabled it.

That setup is gorgeous, what the hell??? This is the kinda thing i wish you could do with Keyboard & Mouse. I'd use controller for this but, i hate navigating all but the basic parts of the UI with a controller. So... screw that.
