i have a wireless ps3 headset that works on my desktop, and my desktop is very close to the ps3. i myself see it as a requirement for coil, because theres those few moments where things dont happen exactly as u planned. where if u have to type it out mid fight vs. just saying it over vc could pretty much mean a wipe. just my 2 gil, take it how u want

Voice chat is never needed. Could it make things easier? I suppose but nothing that can't be acomplished with detailed instructions.

Personally I will not do Coil unless everyone in the group is on voice comms. Been there, done that, not worth the trouble.

It's beyond me why some people refuse to acknowledge that raiding without voice comms is just not viable. That is, yes, it can be done - it's possible to raid wearing a bikini too - but what you're doing is basically gimping your group; if that's okay with you then you're probably not someone I want to raid with anyway.

If you are going into a difficult raid content with 8 fresh people then I really don't see how macros will cut it in compared to voice chat. Especially when new ideas and tactics are getting thrown around a lot, just seems way too inefficient if you are typing.

Wonder if BG was typing stuff for their first few hundred attempts at T5.

Every dedicated raid team requires this, as it provides much easier communication on relaying commands by the raid leader.

But ye, if you pretty much memorize the whole instance and your partymates knows how your team do it, there's no need for voice chat anymore.

If by any chance any of you played Dragon Nest, you'll understand.

You'll need voice communication when rot (ADS) wipes the party - and there's only 4/8 people communicating with each other on TS3/Mumble/Skype. This doesn't apply if everyone absolutely knows what to do. And, I mean absolutely.

But, in my experience, the reply of "I've done this fight many times and I know what to do" to my request of getting on voice comm. has turned out to be nothing more than a false sense of confidence - because it only results to them either dying to laser/forgetting to pass rot.

Typically the way I've experienced voice chat is using it a lot while learning fights and progression raiding, but once we had the fights down we pretty much only talked in between fights to kill time while clearing trash. This was wow raiding however as I haven't bothered with the raiding in xiv, no time for that while finishing my degree.

Unless you're going for world first stuff, using voice chat is simply unnecessary. Voice chat is good for stuff that can't be planned ahead of the time, and any successful raid should not have many, if any, events that didn't happen as planned. The most likely unplanned event would be the generic 'random guy blows up for massive damage' mechanism, like the purple orb in Anantaboga, but this game's lag means by the time your screen has shown you someone else has the purple orb of doom, it's often already too late to correct it due to the lag, thus negating the #1 use of voice chat. Besides, if you have to constantly tell your raid they need to move away with the purple orb of doom, your raid likely has problems. Any predictable event can be handled by a macro, and often more reliably since you're just pushing a button instead of having to actually think about what's going on. The irony is that people are apparently too lazy to make a bank of macros which you only have to make once, but they're okay with repeating the same thing every raid. A successful raid is very consistent, and macros are 100% consistent.
