Does anyone do anything else besides playing FFXIV all day long? Try getting some sleep, take a shower, watch a movie, play another game, and before you know it, maintenance is over.

The whole reason OP is upset is because he does all those things, and has a few hours every evening to play, and can't. And I think his main complaint -- and I get it, even though maintenance is for me 11pm-2am local -- is that he's paying for a service, and he's missing out on that service about 33% of the time right now. If your mobile worked 66% of the time and someone said "hey why don't you just chat face to face and live in the real world a bit" you would not be happy with their helpful advice.
On a side note, impacting maintenance does not need to happen. It's the fault of the product and the service architecture that we have to have it. That said, if we have to have it, let's have it once a week tops, hmm? On whatever the least played day is, please.

"EMERGENCY MAINTENANCE" yes, that screams prolong it as much as possible. The whole reason OP is upset is because he does all those things, and has a few hours every evening to play, and can't. Move down 2 hrs and another part of the world gets screwed. So no matter which way, someone has to take a hit.
This reminds me of my WOW days, where they always have maintenance every single week at 7pm-12am (GMT+8). Maintenance notice is usually given a few days before, so think of it as a mandatory break from gaming. Use that time to gym, go out on a date with gf etc etc. I don't know about you but a mandatory break is good at some point every week.
No problem, and I appreciate you not taking what I said personally. Basically, when a maintenance is done or when a patch/update is implemented, they have no true way of telling how well it will actually work until the mass player-base gets their hands into it. So every now and then, we end up with repeated maintenance intervals like we are having now. It's just the nature of the beast. Though, so far they are doing things much better than they did in FFXI. There were times in that game where maintenance would be near daily for up to a couple of weeks; and before Rise of the Zilart came out, dear lord, lets just forget there was a time before Zilart xDMaybe I was being a bit too cynical, but that's a conditioned behavior on my part. Part of my job requires me to pay very close attention to detail. When something is changed, make sure the change agrees with everything touching it before throwing the contraption back together and hoping it works.
NO!
Life outside of FF, wtf is this heresy!
