Buying gear in Gridania?

Can anyone assist me? I've been looking for almost an hour and the only new gear I can find is a shop that sells boots. Otherwise, it's all stuff for crafting. I do not wish to craft yet as I'm new to the game, I'd just like some new armor and such from an NPC.

There are NPCs selling gear in the appropriate ward (armorfitters, lower tailors). The entrance to the wards (Lotus something) is on the west side of town just north of the aetheryte plaza. If you need some more gil, do your main story quests through rank 15.

Ah, thank you. I thought the NPC in the wards was some sort of odd auctioneer, not an actual salesman. I'm doing okay with Gil, I have about 30,000 and I'm a rank 10 Lancer. I made it all the way there without changing a single piece of gear, so I'm starting to feel a bit icky. In XI I would've went through the newbie subligar AND leather armor by now, and almost into brass or whatever it was called. So wearing the newbie stuff made me feel.. dirty!

You might already be aware of this, but Gridania tends to be the emptiest of the 3 starter cities. There are typically fewer goods available in the market wards being sold by players. If you want to interact with more players, or you want a wider variety of goods available in the market wards, you might consider running to Uldah, which tends to be the busiest of the 3 starter cities.

You can also check out sites like Yellow Gremlin (link in text) that list the goods available, and the NPCs that sell them. You can browse the goods until you figure out what you want to buy, and the site will tell you if an NPC sells them, and if so, where that NPC is located.

Excellent posts, thank you both so much. I hate to be a little snot, but I have one more inquiry. Y'see, I found most of what I needed in the armorfitter and battlecraft area fairly easily, but there seems to be nowhere to buy heavy armor pants. The pants I start with are better than the pants from the tailor, so.. I need to find somewhere with better ones.

For some odd reason, the armorfitter ward's NPC only sells hats and chestpieces, yet the tailor ward sells every slot of gear? Does not seem very fair to me, as I'm a Lancer.

Check the YG link I posted above. Find the pants you want, and it will tell you whether an NPC sells them. If an NPC doesn't sell them, you'll have to either find a player selling them in the Market Wards, or make them yourself.
