I strongly agree with the op. As a mage/support I find this very annoying and needs to be changed. Up and down on the D-pad should be for cycling up and down your party members list. The new targeting option should be set to a separate button.

I think a good compromise would be to add a command that toggles what LEFT/RIGHT does. That way you could just create a Macro where you could only target party members, or where you could only target mobs, or.. Yeah.
But regardless, I DO really miss my UP/DOWN party selection.. We really need that back in some form or another. >_<

This! Final Fantasy XI targeting was worlds better than this. How we ended up with what we have now.. I will never know.
Edit: Also, if I'm casting a Fire/Water/Etc why in the world does it let me target a party member? If I can't cast it on them I see no need to be able to target them in the first place.

Should be AUTORUN + UP/DOWN; makes enough sense, sounds easy enough to use, doesn't eliminate other functionalities, and we already have AUTORUN + CAMERA for zoom controls now, don't we?
I hate this new system too, i would like to press left and target left mobs/npcs/pcs, right and target right mobs/npcs/pcs, down target my self/party and up move on pt(like down). Select or other button should be used for change target system.
