You wouldn't find tanks using Darksteel Chainmail/Chain Coif, and I wouldn't want to party with one that had them.

The defense on those pieces is even lower than PLD/WAR AF and Defense/Magic Defense make a noticeable difference in this game.

Just wait for vanity slots and you can wear a haubergeon to your heart's content.
