    XIV causes pc to BSOD

Ok, I only have this problem with XIV, and so far it only happens if I try to change active windows. It has happened when I alt+tab, when I click a window behind my game, and when I click on xiv's active bar to move it out of the way to get to a window behind it. It's really, REALLY annoying, and has only been happening in like the last week at most.

I've made absolutely no major changes to my pc, nothing that would trigger a sudden onset of BSOD. I've done pretty much everything suggested to fix the problem, I've updated my drivers to the most recent from nvidia's site, I've run 3 different antivirus/malware programs, I've defragged my hdd and given it some more free space, and I've even run a memtest on my ram to make sure there's nothing wrong with it (it passed all 6 tests all 4 rounds) I have no idea what else to do besides reinstall xiv, and I don't want to do that unless I have to.

Anyone have any idea what else I can do?

    My pc:
    Intel i5 760 quad-core
    4 gigs ddr3
    Nvidia GTX 460
    850 watt psu

The pc is only a few months old, and I've had no problems until recently. This really bugs me because I like to browse forums and recipes and listen to music while I play and this has made it impossible to do so. The game runs indefinitely as long as I don't try to move or switch windows.

Get a copy of RealTemp which you can download online. Start the game up and run it and watch the temps of your first two processor cores (FFXIV only uses the first two). If either of them are above 80C, you are damaging your CPU and it probably cannot handle the game. Edit: Above 90C there is a chance it will start to melt because of the heat.

If either of your two processor cores are overheating, you comp will BSOD to save itself from damaging the CPU. Talked about this with someone yesterday. You prob need an active heatsink on your CPU, as its probably getting too hot.

    I also suggest getting a 1000w psu.

None are above 61c, they average 55-61 between the 4, first 2 at 58-60.

do you remember the BSOD code that comes up?
Not a heat issue, so more than likely a piece of hardware is faulty.

I'd start with the GPU since your memory checked out and cpu is ok.

Although FFXIV does have memory leaks; but you seem to have ample memory regardless.

I am sorry Eklan, I am sure you mean well, but you are posting this in quite a few threads, and it is just not right.

His CPU will not melt should it hit 90°C on the cores, and XIV uses the cores assigned by Windows unless affinity is specifically set.

Suggesting a 1000W power supply for a system that uses around 250W at load is.. I do not know what to say.

    @Nakira

BSOD is usually driver or memory related.

I know you said you have run memtest, but just to be sure, do check that the memory is running at correct voltage and latency settings.

Depends on the error code; I usually have people run a battery of tests, since he had not checked that yet I usually tell people to start with that. PSU upgrade is just so if he decides to get a more powerful GPU card, although I suppose the 850W could probably handle an upgrade. True to the 250W load though. 90C will damage parts though over time.

I don't know how to check voltage/latency for memory >.< I can probably look up how though.

    Stop error: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005, 0xBDI69306, 0xB6203624, 0x00000000)

    nv4_disp.dll address BD169306 at BD012000 datestamp 4d9e7d6e

This is the stop error I get, I've looked up the error and everything suggests video drivers or memory issues. I got the stop error again this morning, but unfortunately it happened in game and not when I tried to change windows.

And my 850 psu is more than enough for my needs, I only have the card, the cpu, one hdd, and an optical drive.

This error can be explicitly caused by hardware accelerated graphics cards if you are not up to date on your Windows Update. A little digging revealed that there have been several Windows Update patches that have been issued specifically to deal with this problem when caused by video card drivers. Hit up Windows Update, make sure you have the latest service pack and all subsequent updates.

Alternately, this specific problem is caused frequently by incorrect bios settings, and on systems that are overclocked. Double check your bios settings and consider flashing your bios to the most recent version if you know how to do those two things (but try Windows Update first), and make sure your system is not overclocked (particularly your GPU, but also your CPU.)

As origamikitsune said, run windows update and make sure you have all critical updates.

Then download and install the newest driver for your video card, chose custom + clean install.

I did have some problems with windows updater, but I fixed that and it should have gotten the updates, but I'll check. I don't overclock (I know nothing about it and I'm not gonna try lol) but my 460 came factory overclocked, not sure if that even makes a difference.
