- Why do you need so much bait? You only need three different types depending on the level you are at (don't quote me on that though I may have missed some, you certainly don#t need 30)

Certain fish bite on certain types of bait. If you're looking for a specific fish, you want to use bait that increases the chance of that fish biting, while the other fish won't be interesting in that bait.

Indeed but lends more to bait versus lures than needing 30 different ones. Assuming freshwater/saltwater/sky/dunes one can be reasonable in expecting to need only 8 maximum different types. 4 in bait, 4 in lures.
