Heres what the battle guy said he wants, for you to have to play with skill, and tactics, and get rewarded for that, but some of things they have done so far, worked against that plan.
The current SP system, is totally against that plan, 10 level cap on exp, innately gives you less reward for taking on difficult monsters.
Being able to only fight 1 monster at a time goes against that plan, because you cannot increase the difficulty by fighting hordes of mobs at one time
Auto attack in most general uses, will go against that plan, giving you less control, and thus less ability to use/adapt to the situation you are in.
I think they have some changes in mind to address certain of these problems, but all they really have told us so far is auto attack as the main means of making battle more tactical/rewarding for highly skilled play, and nothing about auto attack seems to create highly skilled play/reward for tactical/strategic fighting.
And most of the reason people say they want it, goes to the opposite point, of it being easier to afk, less annoying to have to press all the time. If this is all auto attack is meant to solve, it would be better for them to add a very gimp gambit (ff12) that will attack for you automatically every second if you hit gimpauto button. that you could turn off, or never use
