In the early days of version 1.0 we had absolutely NO fast transportation method other than anima, which still required that you visit the area before you could teleport there. All of this was on top of a system that restored anima veeeerrrrrryyyyyy sllllllooooooooowwwwwwllllyyyy.
There was one time where I had a quest in Ul'dah, that required travel to Limsa. My anima was below 50 at the time, so I figured, "Hey, I'll save some anima and do some old fashioned footwork." At the time I was talking with some friends over a voice chat program and my mind was wandering as I was walking from Ul'dah. I eventually hit the zone line and walked half way *drum roll* into The Black Shroud, before I realized what I had done, lol.
It turns out I had spent 15-20 minutes running in the wrong direction and never realized it. Around that time, I reeeeeeally wanted to use my anima, but I beat down my impatience and ran all the way back to Thanalan, past Ul'dah, and eventually wound up at the ferry docks to Limsa 30ish minutes later.
After a short (read: long) boat ride to Limsa I arrived at my quest NPC inside the city. Unfortunately, it appears that it was not my "quest NPC" just yet. I had forgotten to talk to another NPC inside Ul'dah for the key item...
Sorry anima, looks like you're not getting replenished today.
