The client absolutely does less than any other client ought to in a MMORPG. When you think you got out of a Weight of the Land, only to see the damage pop up half a second after the casting is done, it's an example of the client not actually doing any work. If it was up to the client to determine whether you get hit, it'd be able to tell you whether you dodged the AE or not as soon as WotL is finished casting. This is never the case. You'll only find out if you got hit or not shortly after WotL is over, but never the moment it's done. All the client is doing is waiting for the server to tell it whether you got hit or not.
