I was using this thing called Sarcasm: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm
I want to add a Lala, Elzen and Hyur, but they will have to wait till after I get out of work
I played UO, EQ, and even the playstation EQ version. Toon was used in all of those games, along with several other terms. Toon really gained popularity during EQs rein.I played Ultima Online when it came out spent a lot of time on it and nobody used the term toon to refer to their characters, nor did I hear people refer to their characters on Everquest as toons, or even the playstation MMO (Adventures of Everquest). First time I heard the term was WoW (pre their first graphic update) as their characters appeared cartoony.
When EQ2 and WoW came out, and everyone left for newer games they took those terms with them. They became the lexicon for both of those games and then with WoW's popularity it filtered into almost every other MMO.
It originated in 1981, from a book called Who Censored Roger Rabbit? and later the movie in 1988 titled Who Framed Roger Rabbit?Toons actually originated from UO...So, the "meaning" attached to the word has existed longer than most of FFXIV's audience has been alive...Thus, it more than likely will exist far beyond the scope of the game.
It also existed earlier in the FF series, particularly FFII and FFIII...
I don't understand why it's a big deal, really. In the early days of UO, your characters looked like cartoons, thus they were called Toons.
We're willing to modify the Oxford dictionary for "Yolo" and "Twerking" yet, none of you can accept the use of a term that's existed since the 90s - Interesting.
Here's the wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Who_Cen...oger_Rabbit%3F
Also, I just checked and a simple search in google of 'origins of the term toon' brings you to a few pages that reference the movie and the book.
I was referencing the use of the word in the MMO sense...But, I do thank you for taking my post entirely out of context. In the future, I'll be more clear. It originated in 1981, from a book called Who Censored Roger Rabbit? and later the movie in 1988 titled Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Also, more specifically, since we're now taking this conversation out of context, it was originally used for "Toon Town"...
I don't think the movie ever made it to the MMO world, however, Toontown the "MMO" did in the early 2000's.
It was still being used in UO, EQ, et al...Long before it became a game.![]()
