Who gives a crap if someone calls their pixelated creation character, toon, avatar, hero, etc. There are bigger problems in this game to worry about then lingo...

Not sure why you think *toon* is a WoW term. It predates that game by about a decade. Sorry if you're not old enough to have been there.

I always used Character or Char for short, which is the same number of letters as Toon. The games typically refer to them as your 'character', so I never really understood the whole 'toon' thing other than an intentional knock on the tendency for MMOs to have to compromise on graphics compared to single player games. I can't really say I've ever played one where the world looked far more realistic than the characters though. (I'm not saying they're not out there. Though, even with WoW, as 'cartoony' as it all looked, the world looked just as cartoony as the characters, so there wasn't really any kind of contrast)

I'm pretty sure toon became more popular then char because it just sounds easier off the the tongue to say toon over char.

Still not sure why people get mental over either word choice? They are both just as bad as any other short hand choice. Do you also go crazy when someone calls an enemy a "mob"? I mean, how is that any better?

Hell, we use to call groups of mobs "zoo's", but I'm old and that was a long time ago. Just be glad some of the really old text/graphical MUD terminology is still not around.

I personally never liked or used the term toon. But it's old and it's a meme, you're not going to squash it at this point. It doesn't bother me much.
