    FF14Translation 'flavour' changes

Just in case you're wondering why the Japanese are still talking about "Invincible" and "Defender" being in ff14.

    Invincible > Hallowed Ground
    Defender > Defiance
    Sturmwind > Storm's Path
    Sturmbrecher > Storm's Eye
    Double Thrust > Phlebotomize
Cherry Blossom (From FF9/FFT) > Chaos Thrust
    Mabarrier > Manaward
    Wall > Manawall
生命浄化法 (Life purification technique) > Leeches
野戦治療の陣 (Field medic formation) > Sacred Soil
    士気高揚の策 (Rallying Strategem) > Succor

I already know about their -ra -ga policy (Although it hasn't been consistently implemented, so Succubi were still using Void Thundaga instead of Void Thunder III), so I'm not covering it here, but therese are a few of the drastic changes in case you're having difficulty following a Japanese conversation about skills.

No comment on the actual changes other than that "Hallowed Ground" and "Sacred Soil" are so similar that I wonder if they made a mistake in the translation tables there.

I still don't understand the reasoning behind this interpretation. If anything, that was one of the few places in this game that could take an example from FFXI and kept the names. Yes, Defender in FF11 was a waste of space, but still.
    Mabarrier > Manaward
Well, there goes my suggested Mystic Knight lv50 ability. =/

    * The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
    * Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

    Not "M-Barrier"? Weird.

Anyways, they still have the Thunderga and so on instead of roman numbers? (Can I have it?)

Well, it's exactly the same as in FF7, so M-Barrier would work too.

Can't remember the details, but back in Beta, the translation team instituted some policy that Fire > Fire II > Fire III was better than Fire > Fira > Firaga for dumb unintuitive English-speaking people that have never played a Final Fantasy before, so the Japanese have Fire/Fira/Firaga and the English version has Fire/Fire II/Fire III. Same for Cure/Miasma/Medica etc (which are Cura/Miasra/Medicara for the II versions in Japanese). The policy wasn't completely implemented though, which is why some enemies (like aforementioned Succubi) are still using "Thundaga".

Their game, their policy, but I really don't get the Hallowed Ground thing.

edit: Speaking of sneaky translation changes, a friend of mine was going on about how they ninja changed "Salted Butter" to "Smooth Butter" in the last hotfix - probably (as I pointed out) because there's no salt involved in the recipe.

After 1.23 people complained that magic didn't scale well so they did not want their spells to be Fire/Fira/Firaga so it seems like they were renamed to please people.

    Cleric Stance....

I think it should be Wizard Stance or Battlemage Stance.

Actually, it's "Crusader Stance" in Japanese, forgot to add that.

so it might be a mistranslation. it's an ability that make you less like a cleric but more like a wizard. so why they named it "Cleric Stance"? make no sense.

Crusader Stance is understandable, it's a priest warrior that invade other lands but they might need to change it in the english version to avoid religious issues and they used "Cleric" which doesn't make sense.

Coming from other mmo's / rpgs cleric stance makes perfect sense as clerics are most often damage dealing healers.

Well, the "ragajada" (suffixes) are simply nonsense syllables that mean 1, 2, 3 and 4. Perhaps the trouble was that people who played FFXI assumed "-ga" meant AOE and not "2". (Maybe that was due an unfortunate choice by the FFXI designers or translators--I don't know.) Clearly in FF14 the suffixes returned to their original FF meanings. In alpha and early beta, the suffixes were there and "-ga" didn't always mean AOE, nor should it have.

As for the other translation differences: All languages are imprecise. Word choice can be an art and translation doubly so. Like movie remakes and song covers, people will like different versions for different reasons.
