Imagine how annoying it would be if NPCs had inventory limits and limited cash. The /shout rage would be hilarious though.

Never had one with limited cash, but in FFXI the guild merchants (FFXI had guilds only for the various crafts, which you could skill up in but which weren't classes in their own right, and each had a merchant selling low-level crafting mats for that craft, along with some low-level equipment/expendables made by that craft) did indeed have limited stock and could indeed sell out, and did regularly on high-demand items. It was common to see a crowd of PCs around a merchant as he opened for the day, looking to mash the "buy" button the moment he opened and get as much as possible before he sold out. You'd have this crowd around the merchant just before opening, and then a minute after opening he'd be sold out and everybody would leave. Nobody /shouted much about it, though; it was like claiming a much-wanted mob spawn ("After the guild merchant sells out, let's go camp Leaping Lizzy!"), just the way things were.

Right, but those of days of old. Back when shop keepers were only open during "business days" and had days off... various shop keeps had different days off and days they were actually open. In FFXIV all shops are available 24/7 as long as the server is up. You can put that down with the other things that FFXI had and FFXIV 1.0 had that were stripped out for some reason. Like weather effects mattering, days of the week being a thing and mattered, the elemental wheel, mobs with unique behaviors..... general flavor/fluff that made FF feel more real. You'd have this crowd around the merchant just before opening, and then a minute after opening he'd be sold out and everybody would leave.
